Transfer case problems

Transfer case problems
Scratching my head.
I have a 99 Ford Ranger 4x4.The transfer case seems to be trying to go from 2WD into 4WD high every time i hit a bump in the road.It will just start grinding and you will have to pull off the road and slow down to a stop to get it to stop.I have the truck locked in 4 wheel drive high all the time now so it won't do it.We have tore the transfer case apart twice,rebuilt it the first time.There is nothing wrong inside of it.Does anybody know what could be causing this?
