Transmission case broke off at the rear 2000 4.0 4x4

I'm not real sure how this would happen. I was driving down the freeway and the truck slipped out of gear and wouldn't go back in. Slipped it into neutral, rolled into a gas station and saw all my transmission fluid has leaked out. Got it towed home and saw the back of the transmission has a big crack in it.

I have the transfer case off now and am pulling the trans tomorrow or the next day but there's no way this is weldable is it? Haha I

figured it's not so I'm looking into finding a replacement already

oh and on your question. Yeah I probably wouldn't weld it. The case is used to align the internal components of the transmission and that's been jeopardized. Even if you found a guy who's real good at welding aluminum it's hard to say it'll ever be perfectly aligned internally again without machine work. Best find another transmission

Well, these things usually happen for a reason. Did it vibrate or anything prior to the failure? Go through any deep puddles before a hard freeze? Just curious what caused it...

Yeah definitely not welding it haha. I got a donor 2wd trans that I'll be rebuilding and swapping over to 4wd this weekend.

I wish I had an answer for why it happened. Not much prior vibration and no hard freezes are happening here in socal.
I did find out my transfer case had pretty much no fluid in it but I'm not if sure that's related at all

How many miles were on the truck when the rear housing broke?

I jot down notes while reading here. One of them is:
"2001 - 2011 automatic among Rangers OR Mazda B series are interchangeable if engine size / type / 2WD-4WD match."

Since your truck is a 2000, this particular warning doesn't apply to you per se.
There were no other notes on interchangeability.
Please post any compatibility issues.

Trans had about 170k when it broke. It had done it's fair share of off roading before this haha

As far as I'm aware the only difference between the 2wd and the 4wd is output shaft length.
After 2001 they added two more sensors, I think. So I've read you could use a 2001-2011 trans with prior year trucks. Just without plugging those extra sensors in, you just can't do the reverse option

So I have everything apart right now, the overdrive planet threw out 4 out of 6 of its copper washer but it did not lock up. So I'm still not sure what cause it to crack.

Anyway the new planet is on the way and I'm getting the rest of the drums rebuilt and cleaned in the mean time.

For those of y'all that followed along, the rebuild is done! The rebuild itself went pretty smoothly, took my time with cleaning everything.
Forgot to connect the manual valve in the valve body on the first start so every gear position was forward. It scared me but I figured it out haha
Truck is shifting great but I've only really had time to take it to work and back so far
