removing transmission

i recently busted my transmission and i was gonna try and find one at the junkyard to put in there because i got a couple quote for rebuilding it, the cheapest one being $900. but im only 17 and it would be summer before i made enough money to fix it. luckily my dad and i have a good understanding of mechanical stuff and my dad has rebuilt a couple transmission in the past so we figured we couldn't make things any worse then they are so we decided we would just attempt a rebuild ourselves. This past weekend we lifted my truck up and started tearing stuff out. we pulled my drive shafts out, pulled out the cross member and skid plates, pulled the starter and removed the y-pipe( what a pain in the a$$). we have done tranny swaps in other trucks before, all Chevy stuff, so we have a little experience but we noticed there isnt a torque converter cover. My dad is a chevy man so ofcourse he had some jokes. but i hope this isnt another one of fords better ideas where they expect us to fit a wrench in the little hole where the starter was to remove the torque converter bolts. hopefully someone who has done this can shed some light on the subject.
thanks for any kind words

btw its a 97 4.0 4x4 with a 5r55e

Its not as hard as you think, getting an extension in that hole. Take it from someone who did transmissions in rangers for 2 years. However, there should be a flap to open w/ a 6mm wrench if i recall, just to the left and below that starter hole. And hey, I've seen 3 2002 and up Chevys w/ blown trannys, in the past 6 months. Just something to think about :)
