truck rolls while parked in gear manual tranny
Yesterday, my 99 Ranger 5 spd, 4 cyl, has started rolling when parked, even on fairly flat surface, and in gear. It seems to drive fine, otherwise. What may be the problem, and is it expense to repair.
Thanks in advance for responding.

4.0's were all 6 cylinder.
4 cylinders were: 2.0, 2.3, 2.5.
6 cylinders were: 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 4.0.
the parking brake is your friend....
my 1st gen decided it didn't like a Honda it saw and rolled across the parking lot on its own (totally avoiding other cars) and hit a Honda accord hard enough to push it in the grass....the kid called the cops cause he couldn't move his car.
luckily one of my friends called me outta class to move my truck....no ticket since it was a private lot and the kid didn't like his honda anyway so he never came after me for damages.
after that i didn't just put my truck in gear, i always put the brake on with it in 1st gear.

rolling in gear
It does it in all gears. C'mon guys, I know your tranny is supposed to hold in any gear, and as of the day before yesterday, it would. Are you trying to says this is normal with a Ranger????
its not going to hold in any gear... if you have it in 5th with no parking brake it could very easily roll on even a small hill.. always leave it in first or reverse, if you have it in first gear it should hold on even a steep hill, have your compression checked and always use your parking brake even on flat surfaces
Ok.. i understand now. he just forgot the period after 4.0. makes sense now. thanks.
4 banger is 4x4 wut??
mine used to roll when in gear on a hill, i replaced my slave cylinder and now it doesnt do it anymore, the slave wasnt allowing the clutch to engage fully, also why i fried a clutch with it. gearing and tire size plays alot in this equation too.....hopw my legitimate answer helps

Rolls in ALL gears as if in neutral-Not compression problem!!
It rolls in all gears like it is in neutral. The clutch must be going out or something. It is not becsause of low compression, I can stick my foot out and move than dang thing myself, whereas yesterday there was no way. Thanks for your help.
the truck drives fine you said... if your clutch was out you wouldn't be able to drive it. Right?
can you feel your engine pumping while you move it?
your truck could still be drivable if you had low compression thats why i figured that.

If you are backed in and on an incline, stick it in reverse. If you are facing forward (nose pointed at garage door) stick it in first. My neighbors powerstroke does the same thing after his wife drives it! Lol. And yes, always use your parking brake!
Hmmm,
does this park mechanism work through the transfer case? I ask, because an AWD explorer, with the front drive shaft removed, or a transfer case viscuos clutch-chain issue, will roll in park.
Just throwing that out there.
If the compression was too little to hold the truck, I doubt it would run well --

ive been thinking... how does it run fine if it feels like its in neutral when actually in gear? id imagine major clutch slipping under load, either that or your crazy and had it in neutral
or im crazy and simply dont have a clue whooooo knows

rolls in gear
It runs fine with engine started, no hard shifting, no apparent slip. When I pull in the lot, and leave it in ANY gear, and turn it off, it will roll until stopped by the brake, even on the slightest incline, and it is not pulling the engine. I know from years of driving, that a manual shift vehicle parked in gear, any gear, should not roll. Again, there is no engine pull. Any tranny specialists out there? Thanks one more time.

Transfer case issues???

No, it its through the transmission. It is a mechanical "park sprawl" that is engaged through the shift linkage via your hand when you throw it in park (AUTO TRANNY ONLY). Ever taken apart a tranny? easier to see then to explain.......
