Weird brake sound, but its not the brakes???
ok ive got a sound coming from the front of my truck, its been there for about a week now and i cant figure out what it is, it sounds like something is rubbing when i hit the brakes, its a pulsing sound so its not constant, with the brakes not pressed it makes it just not as loud, once you hit them, it stops but comes back louder at lower speeds, so heres the kicker(i think) i took it to a brake place, they looked it over and said that they dont see anything other than the rotors are getting close to needing to be replaced, well the brakes were done no more than 5,000 miles ago, that is new pads and rotors yet the pads are still good?? that doesnt seem to make any sense to me, i did have my hub assembley poop out on me a few weeks ago and it was rubbing against the caliper and warped the rotor pretty bad so i had it turned but heres the other kicker, that was the driver side, well they said that the passenger side was wore down more than the driver side and nothing was ever done to the passenger side (turning wise), they seem to think its something in the suspension, i have no clue, if anyone can give me some ideas as what ot check that would be great.....

c'mon someone has to have some ideas....
stupid question #2, can you just put new rotors on and be good to go or do you have to bleed the brakes???? please excuse my ignorance, i am 100% clueless when it comes to brakes and i need to learn.....fast

no need to bleed the brakes to change rotors. if you change rotors i recommend changing pads as well. the pads go fast than rotors. now you have 35s.
best thing to do is to to jack the truck up and sping the wheels, see which side makes the noise and take the wheel off and inspect, heck take pics. see what is loose if there is anything that could be loose or should be.
changing the front brakes on a 4wd ranger is easyier than you think.

well i took the truck to a shop and they couldnt find anything wrong with the brakes besides the fact that the rotors are getting worn down, the pads were fine though, they are practically brand new.....this is really killing me, i cant think of a damn thing that it could be besides the hub assembly it self being bad....
rotors dont wear down. they groove. the only reason they groove is becasue the pads have failed. you were just in the sand, sand sucks on pads and rotors. i replaced my pads and new shoes after i went to the dunes.
brakes jsut dont last long when wheeling. also you are running 35s now that doesnt help the life of them either.
how can one be stumped if they havnt looked yet?
btw rolldog, the 4wd ranger doesnt have bearings in the disc like 2wd. we have a hub and the hub has to be replaced to replace the bearing.
4wd ranger the discs just slide on the lugs.

when you replace the rotors im just advising that you replace the pads at the same time. Do what you want but you asked for help and a opinion i gave it.
also if your rotors are warped enough that it is hitting the pads(which could be making the noise) i can guarantee that the pads are not in that great of shape.
atleast buy some pads when you get new rotors so if the pads are bad you can swap them out as you are replacing the rotors. if they are not bad return the pads.

i appreciate your opinion i just though we were talking about 2 different things that all, ok well im going to get the parts together, when i replace the pads and rotors does that require me to bleed the system??? and another thing, drilled and slotted rotors......ive heard that they wear down pads faster than regular rotors....

iwould just get a good quality pad and rotor. drilled and slotted wont help unless your really hard on it.
you will not have to bleed the system.
what is your email. i wrote a procedure on this swap for a class in college. I can forward you the document. I wrote it fast and it is just a rough draft but it may help.

ok well rotors have more than enough on them, i bought new ones and compared and they are pretty much they same, so i returned the new ones, the pads are like new as well, the only thing i could find is that the backing is kinda falling off and maybe the clips are kind of beat up, i put some lubricant on the back and on everything else and it seems to keep them somewhat quiet...
zach is the man with that write up of his.......can help even the most retarted people change brakes ;-)
