What fluid do I use in my transfer case?

I have a 1999 ford ranger 4x4 that im going to do a maintenance over haul on. I was looking to change out all the old fluids in the drive train currently. I read the owners manual and it states that Mercon is to be used in the transfer case only, not Mercon V. I called ford and they said to use Mercon V as Mercon isnt made anymore. Have you guys had any luck using Mercon V in the transfer case? I feel like Ford may be wrong, they're also recommending to use 5w-20 in our engines

Assuming a 1354 TCase?
TCF should be compatible with MerconLV

Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc LV is what I used in my TC with success.

LV

I have a 2008 ranger with a B/W 1354, I have changed my T/C 4 times since I've owned, now in 2010 when I FIRST changed it, ford WAS making Mercon, since then or by the time I changed fluid again in 2016, I used LV and in 2022 again LV, and just 2 months ago I did it again with MERCON LV, I don't have any experience with dex type, but I do know FOR SURE 100% that motorcraft MERCON LV works, and a friend of mine has used just about any other brand that is red on his 1354 in his ford's, he said since no clutches in those ( just chains) those gears don't know what the hell is lubricating them as long as it ISNT GEAR OIL TYPE, that's the only big no no, it is not like a transmission with certain clutch mat'rl that calls for certain type atf, I've not known ANY of his t/c's from going bad, but I would just stick to that MOTORCRAFT MERCON LV in qt bottles with a little pump, took me about 1.25 qts and 145 pumps to fill my 1354, hope this helps.

It wasn't too long ago when Ford back-specced all its transfer cases to LV.

Want to hear something funny? I only recently learned that my transfer case has an oil pump.
