Do transfer cases use Mercron V or Mercron ATF
Do transfer cases use Mercron V or Mercron ATF
I think I have a legitimate question, I’m a little confused.
I bought a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L SOHC automatic transmission with 114,000 miles on it about a year ago. The car fax only showed the usual maintenance and smogs. It didn’t show any history of servicing the transmission, transfer case, or either differentials. So the last couple days I’ve been servicing these. I’m a little indecisive on what to put in the transfer case. The parts technician and the transmission technician at the Ford dealership says the transfer case takes Mercron V.
The owners manual says to put Mercron V in the transmission and Mercron ATF in the transfer case. The Mercron V bottle even says “not for transfer cases” on the back of the bottle. I showed these gentlemen the bottle and where it stated “not for transfer cases” but they still state that Mercron V goes in the transfer case. The technician stated that the newer vehicles can’t take Mercron V in the transfer cases but my older Ford Ranger can take it. So I serviced my transfer case with Mercron V today. I am hoping to get some feed back on this issue because it’s kind of keeping me awake wondering if I made the right choice to go against the owners manual and follow the technicians guidance.

Mercon V is NOT for the transfer case. In my manual and others the fluid intended for the T-case is Mercon(R) XT-2-QDX. However Ford does not make that any longer. That is why they came up with a new specific T-case fluid
Alrighty, I had my wife go to Ford and get the transfer case fluid while I was at work and I serviced the transfer case with Motorcraft Transfer Case fluid. I have no idea why Fords computers still say I should put Mercon V in the transfer case.
The newer, 2002 and up Mercon V, was changed to be used in the older Mercon applications so "can be" used, but Ford realized that transfer case fluid would be better with its own formula, for long term use.
You wouldn't "ruin" transfer case running new Mercon V, but not too expensive to use recommended fluid so why not use it.
Fluid/oil technology changes yearly, so whats "best" changes with that, problems arise when you insist on driving vehicles that are over 10 year old, lol.

The Ford fluid is only $5.80 at rock auto
