What transfer case do I need?

Hey everyone! New to this forum. I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 extended cab 4.0. I recently have had issues with my transfer case and now am in the process of looking for a used one. I have been looking on LKQ auto parts where I usually shop and saw that they have multiple options for my truck. I am not exactly sure how I figure out what type of transfer case is used in my truck. I looked underneath on the transfer case and looked at the tag attached to one of the bolts. The numbers on the tag do not match anything I have looked at online. Does anyone know exactly what type of transfer case goes into my truck? I believe it is a warner 1354, but do not know the exact ID number. It is elect. shift into 4x4 not manual. Thanks in advance!

What issues are you having with your T/C ?

Some thoughts !

If it is just not coming out of gear then it is probably the Solenoid that actuates the T/C.

I have troubles with the T/C not coming out of 4x low... I jerk the truck back and forth until it finally releases.

IF you intend to buy a new transfer case.. think Manual Transfer Case ! My take a little extra work to fit it in place but no more in and out problems.

yes, 1991 and up Rangers used the BW1354 transfer case

They came in manual or electric shift versions, manual are best but scarce

The front and rear drive shaft connections did change, and speedometer hook ups, over the years

Your best match for a 2003 would be 2001 to 2012 ranger transfer case
From a manual or automatic transmission doesn't matter they both used the same transfer case and bolt pattern

They are not to difficult to rebuild, so I would check with local 4WD shops to see if they recommend a local rebuilder, and they are often done on an exchange basis, you bring in your old one they look it over(no cracked cases, lol) and you walk out with a rebuilt one, so no real downtime
Buy used is always a roll of the dice, for the BW1354 its a pretty safe gamble, but still a gamble

The issues I'm having with the truck is it is hitching and making a banging noise underneath near the transfer case like something is binding up. I live in maine where there is a lot of snow. It happens when there is snow on the road. it happens in 4x4 and in 2wd. I could be driving at 40mph and it feels like the back end is going to lock up sometimes. I got told by numerous people that it is probably the transfer case. I know I need a BW 1354, I just don't know what I need for the ID number because mine doesn't match anything i've seen online. Does it matter if they match or can I just pick up any elect. shift BW1354?

The BW1354 are all the same internally, only differences are external, rear drive shaft and front drive shaft connections.
And of course manual or electric

Have you checked the slip joint

That was my first idea of what the problem was. I had my mechanic take a look and he said it was ok, he added grease just to make sure. So when I go to buy a BW1354, where do I look on my truck to check for the ID number? Would it be on the tranny? or transfer case itself ? I'm asking because my mechanic said the ID number needs to match so the connections are the same.

There will be a plate attached with a bolt by the rear driveshaft, stamped steel plate

Look here: FORD BW-1354 BORG WARNER TRANSFER CASE

Scroll down to see what the numbers on the plate mean

I'm having these exact symptoms during the same weather conditions, even the same state! very interested in hearing if you resolved these issues and what the diagnosis was. thanks!
