What is this rubber plug looking thing on the lower side/ bottom of the tranny ? Its close to the front near the clutch.

This is a 2003 manual tranny. I think tranny fluid is leaking out of this rubber plug looking thing. I opened the fill plug and check and the fuild level is full.

 

Transmission fluid is red. That may be hydraulic fluid from the slave cylinder.

 

Is manual transmission fuild red ? I thought it wasn't.

 

Ranger Manuals use the same Merc V ATF, not gear oil.

 

Ranger manual transmissions and transfer cases use Mercon and late model Ranger automatic transmissions use Mercon V. Both are red.

 

That looks like gear or engine oil to me.

T-cases and manual transmission = mercon ATF

Auto transmission = Mercon V atf

 

Learn something new everyday.. I knew they were ATF didn't know they wern't merc v.

 

thats just an inspection plug, pull it out and grab a flashlight and see whats leaking. it looks to me like your slave is probly leaking, check the clutch fluid reserviour on the driverside firewall. if its low than you are leaking brake fluid from the slave, time to pull your tranny and replace and bleed the new slave properly or you will find yourself not being able to release the clutch and shift.

 

I checked the tranny fluid it is black.

What kind of fluid does the clutch use ?

 

The clutch release uses brake fluid which can range anywhere from clear to brown depending on age and condition.

 

Bob I opened the "Fill" thing on my transmission and there was most definitely BLACK fliud in it. I saw nothing red anywhere. I guess thats ok i have never changed it, i don't know.

However I did check my clutch fluid and it was low. After I filled it the clutch felt better, so i guess its my clutch that is leaking.

 

yea, well, its time to change your tranny fluid anyway if its black like that, so get some mercon, and a new slave cylinder and a bottle of brake fluid. drian the t-case and pull it off, drain the tranny and pull it back. unbolt the slave, bolt on the new one. slap the tranny back and place and t-case back on. refill them both with new mercon atf. reconnect and bleed the slave to get all the air out.
