When will my clutch go out?

Hello all,

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 4X4 Sport, manual tranny, V6 engine.

I did my complete 100,000 mile service at the dealer a couple of years ago. Since then, I've put about 25,000 miles on it.

When the engine is running, the first and second gears are really hard to shift into. I have to work the accelerator carefully, shift it into neutral and jiggle it a little bit, then it will shift easily, as if the synchros were working OK.
Third, fourth gears shift into OK, with only an occasional shift to neutral first before shifting easily into those gears.
Fifth gear shifts into and out of just fine.

Is my clutch trying to die? or is it just normal wear and tear on the disc(s), and it will require service sooner or later?

Thanx for any advice.

Larry

There may be some air in the system, check clutch fluid reservoir in the engine bay, make sure it is not dry.

Then Bleed the clutch system, or have someone do it

Check to see if your slave is leaking. They are notorious for leaking on these trucks. Ford also went full retard and put it in the bell housing. So if it is bad, you might as well do the clutch while you're in there.

clutch prob

I bought my 2000 with 61k. I replaced the oe clutch at 191k. Symptom was.hard to shift. The oe clutch is not adjustable. New clutch etc, master and slave cylinders, change tranny fluid.... $536. It's a bitch to bleed these things, so that seemed cheeep.
