My truck has done this ever since i got it at 160,000 miles. When releasing the clutch in first gear to take off, sometimes i get a whining sound depending on how slow i let off of the clutch. If i let off real slow the wine lasts until the clutch is fully out. I've altered my clutch habbits to avoid this noise, but every once in a while i'll do it on accident. What is this caused by?

 

I think you need WD-40 on your clutch Joints (inside the truck)

 

I get a whine too, every now and than. Only thing is I can't get it to repeat all the time. It seems to do it when taking off kinda fast and letting the clutch out fast. Or if i have a trailer with a load and than try to take off it some times does it. Its odd has no real pattern, when I what it to do it it doesn't. I'm guessing it has something to do with the slave cylinder or the clutch is slipping and causing the noise??? dunno

 

Adrian, I'm 98% sure you're describing the same problem I've had w/ my clutch. When released under load it squeaks like a pig. It starts very occasionally and only under very hard launches or steep inclindes but quickly works up from there. I couldn't hear it on my first clutch at first, my GF (w/ her better hearing) did. Even the dealership claimed I was nuts. Later it took a test drive w/ me in the truck to for them to 'find' the problem. In the end it ended up being a bearing in the slave cylender. Thre was a TSB for something in the clutch, I think it was related to this issue. Big big bux if yer not under warranty anymore. I'm on clutch/cylender #2 and it's starting to make noise again. Before the warranty is up I'm planning to bring the truck back, have them at least diagnose the problem, and then seriously consider trading as soon as it's fixed. Either that or seriously consider an after-market extended warranty..

 

I get alittle whiney noise when I start it up and let the clutch out, weather I just put it in gear and I am starting to move or when I put it in neutral and I am letting it warm up a bit. It stops after a few seconds.

 

Colin-bearing in the slave cylinder? Do you mean the throwout bearing?? I don't think there is a bearing the slave cylinder. I should take it in and see about them fixing it. I'm only at 24k and 1.5years so I got a couple more miles and years to go. I need them to check the power steering too, but I think the problem is the front locker caused added stress on the pump. So don't want to cry about something that really isn't their fault.

 

Yes Adrian, you are probably right, I am probably mistaken. .. I wouldn't be so light on Ford though. You are not the first to have this sort of problem. Dave of Dave & Julie fame is on at least his second clutch if I remember correctly, and he isn't a high milage/heavy user either. This bearing seems to be a weakness of the clutch, although the problems seem more common in 4.0L 4x4s, especially the LIIs..
