I'd still rather a clutch pack LSD over the Torsen.

Why would you still want a LSD that wears out and cannot be counted on to actually work when you need it? The torsen does not wear out, does not lose it's torque transfer ability as it gets older, and is stronger than the ford carrier.

Oh god what did I start? I just wanted to shed some light on the subject...I never said one was better!

Though I do like the fact that I dont have to deal with clutch packs and friction modifier

Hell, I love off roading although I haven't been in a while. That is one hobby, the other is getting my drag stang finished and ready to race in march!

I just had a bad experience with my old Torsen, thats all and why I'm biased against it. No need to start a brand war, just putting my $0.02 in

Just noticed this old post and had to comment that depending on the model of Torsen, they can and do wear out. Some of the Torsens still have a "clutch" internally. It's essentially a washer at either end of the helical gears that has a friction surface to them which can wear out. Mazda Miata guys running the Torsens know all about this issue..

As for the Ranger Torsen, which should be the T2 model, I'm not sure if it has these friction washers/plates or not. I can't locate a diagram of the exact model to verify.

For those that are interested, and have the 31 spline axle, Torsen is running a sale on replacement FX4 units right now. Nearly half price. https://torsen.com/product/ford-8-8-31-spline-t2-copy/

I have run both and liked both. The clutch type LSD on my 89 STX was worn a bit when I sold it at near 200K miles. It still worked but the torque bias was down some from when it was new. The Torsen in my FX4 has 241K miles on it and it still works as good as the day I brought it home new from the showroom floor. It was replace within the first couple months due to a recall but I never had any problem with it. The feature I like best about the Torsen is; it has a slightly higher torque bias than the factory clutch type LSD.

Well that's good to read because I am wondering if it is worth it to re-use a torsen that has 280K on it when re-building an 8.8 that I just bought.
