How To: Replace Oxygen Sensors

Mod: Replacing Oxygen Sensors
Difficulty: 1/10 (if you can turn a wrench, you can do this)
Time: ~15min (after the sensor is diagnosed and located)

This How To covers the replacement of Oxygen Sensors. Although there are three sensors on a Ford Ranger, the procedure is the same for all of them.

NOTE: Always were appropriate eye protection while working under your vehicle.

NOTE: Exhaust Systems operate at a VERY HIGH temperature and can cause SEVERE burns. All repairs to the exhaust system should be done with the vehicle COLD.

Tools/Equipment needed:
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • 7/8” Wrench
  • Replacement Sensor

Step 1:

First step is to locate the sensor its self and its connector. After six years mine looked pretty rusty.

Step 2:

Next is to unplug the Sensor. Follow the wires to the plug. This is where the small flat head comes in handy. These sensors are plugged in pretty good and the screwdriver helps to hold down the clip while you pull. This was the most difficult part of the procedure.

Step 3:

Once the sensor is unplugged you can remove it from the bung. At first try it looks as if the sensor will be a pain to get out. But after getting a good angle on it, it broke free with less effort than I expected.

NOTE: Be careful of the Gas Tank cross member. When the sensor breaks loose, watch your elbow, that cross member hurts…lol..

Step 4:

Next is to install the new one. The new sensor should come with Anti-Seize on the threads, if it doesn’t you should apply a little bit so it doesn’t get frozen in.

Step 5:

Plug the Sensor back in, and you are done!

Mod Complete:
Told you it was easy!

Can someone give a brief tutorial on locating each of the Oxygen sensors? Are all three exactly the same part?
