Icon5 Camper Shell Question...

I have a question for everyone with camper shells and anyone else who has an opinion on this. I am looking at a shell and it does not have carpet in the inside. Is it a nice thing to have carpet or not a big deal? Is it a deal breaker not to have carpet? The cap is in good shape otherwise. Your opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

The carpet covers the exposed ugly fiberglass. imo...no biggie to not have carpet. but..i think carpet adds to making it look good when you flip open that rear window.

'camper shell' is misleading sorta... its either a camper aka like am rv. or a canopy or shell aka what trigger01 has.

I don't have carpet. I would love to have it, but I don't, no biggie. Get it. Paint it if the white fiberglass color really bothers you or take it some where and have it carpeted.

I'd mask the windows off and spray on that black with white and grey speckle paint in it.

Thanks for the responses. I will have to decide. I looked but didn't find any places that could install carpet in a truck cap. It might just be worth getting it because it is cheap.

It is an older A.R.E and they are asking $200. It is one that is raised above cab height. It looks like the new A.R.E MX Series.

If it's what you want go for it. It looks to be in condition. I am just not crazy about the bubble in the top as far as aesthetics, but it would be nice to have the extra room. I say go for it. Good price.

That is the same way I feel. I don't really like it but the extra room would be nice. On the inside pic of the rear window. On the roof it looks like a crack, it may just be the pic. What do you think?

Don't buy it. The cab is lower and shaped differently on the older rangers. It will not look good. I would never put a mismatched cap on a newer model truck.

x2!

I'm on the hunt for one that's as high as the cab..no raised areas. PLUS, I want all three windows to lift open...none of this crappy side sliders.

Yea, I probably won't get it. I thought ranger cabs were shaped the same since 93'. Does that mean I have to find one that is for 98' and newer?

I have carpet on my aluminum cap.

Personally, I think the carpet adds insulation as well. I noticed it was warmer in the back when I used it for camping this summer then to be sleeping in a tent. Then again, there were other reasons that shall not be named for the warmth .

I like the mid rise series for the room and the looks, but that's me personally. My next cap will be the MX series.

And you can get carpeting done at any dealer of caps.

Also, older bed styles were different. The cap I have for my truck was from a 96 Ranger. It flares out at the cab side of the bed, making it look ridiculous, and also harder then hell to install.

Yes, 98 and newer.
My cap on my ranger had carpet on the inside, also seemed to help keep it warmer and help with condensation. Should be very easy to install yourself, it is just fabric glued in there I think.

Yup, just glued.

One thing I wonder, though, is if they used a normal carpet glue, or if they had to use a different type for the fiberglass? Maybe ask a local dealer.

If you're not going to be completely happy with it, don't get it. I didn;t even think about it being on an older truck. I prefer the caps that are even with the cab, much cleaner look.

x2

Trigger has a sweet one and I got mine cuz it lines up with body just like his, smooth and clean look to it. The carpet detail is so minute that you shouldn't care. Unless you're a neat freak about the bed of a pickup truck

Trigger's looks good.
Here is the cap on my 98. These were taken after I swapped wheels/tire to sell it a year or two ago. Leer 100XLT...
This is what I want for the F150, but now it's called the 100XQ I think.
A good matching canopy is a huge difference from a mis-matched one.

I like Brians old truck. It looks real clean witht the new matchin cap.

But the cost difference on a new cap compared to a used one is huge. New cap = $1200-$1400. Used cap = $200-$400.

I got mine used with the carpet kit for $400 on craigslist. Then got it as close to color matched as possible. And i actually sleep in the back of my truck more often than i ever thought i would, and am really glad i have the carpet in the back. Im sure if you find a cap you could use some good spray on glue and put up your own carpet and build yourself storage underneath. It def worth it in my opinion.

X2 on the cap that is taller than your cab, dont do it, the extra head room would be nice but i think it looks funny and if you ever want to add a roof rack you cant do it with that. keep us posted.
