Does anyone know where I can get a mounting kit for the bed of my truck? I want one that I'd be able to take out and put in easily. I don't know if they even something like that but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask.

 

I have two flag pole mounts in the back of mine. Will get some pics this afternoon and post em up for ya. Basically just some angle iron and electrical conduit. A little paint and some bolts.

 

I just ground down some 1x3s to fit in the stakeholes, and put eye-bolts through them, although if I had it to do over again I'd reinforce the stakeholes, because the back edges crimped down under the stress of flying two 3x5' flags at 50+mph speeds. I still mount the flags for special occasions (Veterans Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, etc.) and I find the damage to the stakeholes to be an acceptible cost for displaying my patriotism as I see fit, although I try to limit my speed to <45 when they're on.

That shouldn't be hard to make for anyone with basic welding skills.

 

I made one with my friend, we just took some 2" squair tube and drilled a hole on the end, put thick wall metal pole through it and welded it up. doing the same when I finaly get my hitch done on my truck...

 

Well, finally got the pics. My mounts are a lot more permanent, but have never gotten in the way or been a problem. When my poles are installed I can grab the poles and shake the entire truck and nothing bends or moves or gets loose. That being said, here are the pics:

I used the mounting holes for the bed extender that comes standard on the newer trucks. I used two pieces of 2"x2" angle iron that I had laying around the house to make the brackets. The poles are 0.5" electrical conduit from home depot and i installed caps on the tops to make them look a little better and keep any rain out of them. All I had to remove were the tailights to get to the back side of the mounting locations.






After 'fabbing' everything up I painted the poles and brackets with Rustoleum Hammerite paint so I wouldn't have to worry about rust. I leave the brackets on all the time and just take the poles on and off as needed. I have two bolts holding the brackets to the truck and two holding the poles to the brackets. I have two holes drilled in the poles for the flags and use clevis pins to hold the flags on. If you guys have any questions just let me know.

is that aluminum?... you sure you got enought metal left after those holes? cuz if you have a flag bigger then 4x6 on there your gunna have alot of drag at highspeeds

 

No, the brackets and poles are steel that have been painted. Forgot to mention that I also covered the back side of the brackes with foam tape so the metal didn't directly contact the truck paint. I have had 3X5 flags on both poles at 70mph+ on the freeway. Like I said above, you can grab either pole and pull hard on it and shake the entire truck. These things are solid and WILL not bend. The poles will start bending long before the brackets fail, and being electrical conduit, I don't foresee that happening very easily.

 

One thing I'm sure you'll find is that even the toughest flag you can find will fray at 70mph.

 

This is very true. I don't run my flags on the freeway very often for this reason. I only run them when cruising with a group or on my way to a show etc. Just mentioned it so it would give some idea of the strength of what I have. The flags will rip off the mounts long long long before the mounts or poles bend or fail.
