Grille removal from grill shell

I have an '02 XLT and was wondering what it would take to remove the grill from the grill shell (just the chromed part). Is it possible or is it all one piece? On some years it looks like you can but no sure about mine. The reason I ask is because I would like to paint it.

I've seen guys simply sand down the chrome and paint it that way. Rustoleum for plastic is what i used on my grille on my 98. But granted that was stock plastic.

Yeah, I want to paint it black but I was wondering if I can take the grill out of the grill shell, you know, just the center section that has the Ford emblem.

If its anything like a 98 you should just be able to pop the hood and there are four clips with set screws in them
Then towards the bottom there is a bolt on each side

He's looking to separate the inner and outer. I could be wrong but I think it's just a bunch of tight tabs that like Pedro said are tough to separate.

I just did plastidip on my grill right over the chrome no prep and the result is awesome and reversable if you want to change the look later. I posted pics in another thread
