Sweet, yeah i am still trying to decide on Halogens or HID off road lights.. I love the hids and what i also like is that they wont ment my grille being HID's run very very cool compared to Halogen bulbs.

 

Do what Justin did then, get some cheapo lights and put the HIDs in them. And they would match your heads

 

Yeah, we also found sites that sell HID offroad lights with internal ballasts.. now that is HOT haha.

Thats what i am going to look into doing.

 

Yeah I saw that, I didn't look at prices though. Alon said the Kragen HIDs worked pretty well also.

 

Yeah, i like the ones mobilehid.com has because of the chrome finish and the internal ballast. They are also only 100 free shipping.

Those kind of HID kits are sketchy depending on the company and i already run 6000k hids single beam in my ranger..

Now i just want offroad lights for my hi beams. and i will just buy hid ones that are 4300k. that way i can have 6000k lows and 4300k highs.

 

So i have an update on those HID offroad lites from mobilehid.com:

I asked:
"I am looking at your KC style offroad lights you offer in HID, the bulb offered is 8000K. Is it possible to get the light with a 4300k or a 6000k bulb instead?

Their response killed the deal:
"Unfortunately it is not possible. Although normally the 4300k or 6000k would produce more usable light because they produce less color and won't get washed out into the dark asphalt but when going off road, many of our customers prefer the 8000k for the style and they find the light output does not matter due to the color because the natural terrain isn't dark enough to wash out the light.

It says its full replaceable...I would think it is a standard HID bulb that could be easily switched out. Wish they had pics of them being used on the site to see the color. Hmm...I still want to say give it a try but they don't take returns on the clearance stuff...

 

Yeah i dont think they were clearance items.. i guess i could buy spare bulbs.. but they arent cheap unless i order vvme.com for bulbs they are like 3.99 a bulb instead of 50.

I'm looking to do something similar to the OP.

I installed a 6000k DDM kit in my Ranger and I love it, vastly superior low beam visibility, but unfortunately I've lost my high beams. I've also aimed my head lights down a little more then normal, just so I don't blind other drivers. So I'm being considerate but it makes the low beams even more ineffective as high beams.

I've found that driving late at night on unfamiliar country roads - while not a regular occurrence - is a bit of a problem due to the lessened visibility.

I've got this style grille:



and am hoping to find an off-road / auxiliary light option to mount behind the grille and wire so that when I activate high beams from the cab they will come on. Right now if I activate high beams from the cab I lose all headlights.

I could purchase a hi/low HID kit and replace the ones I installed, but I've heard bad things from a buddy about the lights getting stuck in the HI position, and don't want to mess around with that. I could also revert back to the stock halogens, but again at this point I don't see that as an option. I'm not a 4x4, and don't off-road, so I want the solution to be fairly subtle, not an in your face light bar lol.

JayCheetwood did you ever find a solution that worked for you? I am curious to know how this resolved. Also if you wired lights to the high beam wiring I would love to know how you did that. Thanks!

EDIT: Here's a crazy idea. I've done the blinker mod, so the front side markers blink with my turn signals. I could then remove the normal turn signal bulbs in the headlight housing, replace with halogen bulbs to act as high beams (size and pattern may not work) and wire those up to be my high beam wiring. Somebody will shoot this down lol.
