peeling clear coat...what's best for it

okay, so my hood was painted flat black because of the peeling of ford clear coats, now 90% of my roof has no more clear, so can I just get a rattle can of clear and spray it over it, or do i need to sand down the hood to bale metal like the hood and go from there...I'd like to keep my original paint if possible, but I really don't want to get the truck resprayed with my limited amount of income.

Best way is to completely redo it, but if that is not an option, you can sand it down and repaint that section of the truck, but it will not be an exact match because the rest of the paint on the truck has had 18 years of sunlight beating on it. You could always do the whole truck with a rattle can.

Paint it some kind of red. Painting it black will make is super hot in your truck and in case you haven't noticed it gets hot in the summer in GA.

RATTLE CANS WONT HOLD UP ON THE ROOF. IT GETS LOTS OF UV EXPOSURE SO I GIVE IT 6 MONTHS BEFORE ALL THE SHINE IS DEAD AND GONE FROM IT AND IT STARTS TO PEEL AGAIN. IF YOU PAINT OVER THE BASECOAT THE UV WILL PENETRATE THE RATTLE CAN CLEARCOAT AND ATTACK THE BASECOAT. THE BASECOAT WILL THEN CHALK UP AND PEEL. WHEN IT PEELS IT WILL THEN TAKE THE CLEAR WITH IT.

THATS WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE ORIGINAL PAINT TO BEGIN WITH. THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CLEARCOAT AND EITHER THE THICKNESS, OR THE CLEAR ITSELF. IT FAILED TO PROVIDE ENOUGH PROTECTION FOR THE BASECOAT, AND ALLOWED IT TO FAIL. OF COURSE, WHEN YOU DESTROY A FOUNDATION WHATEVER IS ON TOP WILL INEVITABLY FAIL AS WELL. ID SUGGEST DOING IT ANOTHER WAY IF YOU CAN. REAL PAINT WILL HOLD UP BETTER AND IF YOU DO HAVE TO REDO IT AGAIN YOU WONT HAVE TO STRIP IT ALL OFF. YOU WONT BE ABLE TO PAINT OVER RATTLE CAN STUFF IN THE FUTURE WITHOUT TAKING IT OFF. IT WILL WRINKLE AND CAUSE ALL SORTS OF ISSUES.
