The wheels of moving have started to turn, and the chances of us actually doing so are becoming more and more real, much to my excitement (I hate this city).

Our desires are to move off into the country, closer to my father's work. Country = deer. Can't see deer = accident = $$$.

So, in order to combat these four-legged suicidal beasts, I want to install some seriously bright spot lights behind my grille to reach off into the distance better.

Not only that, but the LED headlight kit I bought doesn't actually highbeam. You push the stalk and it does indeed recognize that you did, but unfortunately you don't really get any higher up light. Regardless, I'd be doing this anyway.

To do this I plan simply to tap into the highbeam circuit, using a relay to turn these on via the same circuit.

Past two set of lights I bought for road illumination from superbrightleds.com, I haven't been exactly the happiest with, but that's another story.

So, ceasing my rambling, what lights would you guys recommend for this application? Something really bright, and good bang for buck. I have a set or two I'm looking at, here. Not sure if they're any good.

 

After a little searching, I found something at harbor freight that may suit well.

For ten bucks a pop, I'd consider that a steal.

Off-Road Lights - 6" Off-Road Light System

It seems to be that the chrome finish on these isn't too sturdy, and apparently begins to pit quite soon. It's advised to disassemble them, clean them, and shoot them with clearcoat (or another paint, if you're so inclined), let them dry and put them back together for a long lasting finish.

Another upgrade that people recommend is to swap out the 55 watt h3 bulbs for 100 watt bulbs. Of course autozone wants ten bucks a bulb, so I took to amazon and found them for two bucks a whack.


Only downside of these h3 100 watt bulbs is they apparently only have a 50 hour lifespan which is insanely low. In fact, many reviews say they burned out even faster than 50 hours. I'm doubting the price is worth it, considering that this is an 'addon' item and you must have 25 dollars worth of stuff before you can purchase these.


The more I think about it, the more I think the h3-100w isn't worth it at this point. An LED equivalent would be nice. Run cooler, last longer, fits my current theme, but they're usually a lot more expensive, too; and rightfully so.

The search continues.

 

I'd suggest going for a led bar or spot lights. The halogens will not hold up as well.

 

I'd ultimately like to go with LEDs. Less power consumption, more compact, and generally not vibration-sensitive, unlike tungsten filaments.

 

My $.02 I'd run a combo LED light bar with floods and spots. Or three individuals with two floods on the outside and a single spot in the middle.
It's the sneaky deer on the side of the road that always seem to get you.
