i was at northern tool a few weeks ago and noticed that they have low gloss tractor paint for sale there which is exactly what i want. but the only problem is that it is intended to be rolled on. i have a spray gun which i would like to use. so what can i add to the paint to make it able to be used in a spray gun

 

The can will usually state what to use for a thinner , most likely mineral spirits.

 

I bought Fleet paint for my 77 F250, basically its the paint emergency vehicles and semi trucks use. I got the "fire engine red" and it came as 3/4 gallon paint, 1/4 gallon hardener.

Put it in the spray gun and it goes on great. Its tough paint and it costs less than $100.

Its similar to the tractor paint you saw, put it can be sprayed on.

 

i was jsut reading through it kinda quickly and the directions were for rolling it on, i guess i should go back and read it more thoroughly

Here's it is a day after I painted it. It doesn't look very red, but the camera I had that day was kinda crappy.



But I think it turned out awesome. One gallon covered all this and the inside.

 

I'm getting close to being done. I need to get some updated pics, but its gonna make a great farm truck.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the other thing that makes fleet paint awesome. You don't need any primer!

Its gonna replace my dads 76 Chevy as our farm truck.

I got that flatbed for free, now I need to weld up a headache rack to protect the back glass and mount some off road lights.

I'm considering a lift down the road but right now i'm just gonna run it as is.

 

I use black tractor enamel with a hardener on my frame. Looks great, and has held up great so far.

 

theres a big lifted up truck thats next to my work, i have no idea who makes it but its really old. the owners painted it john deere green and yellow and put some swampers on it. ill have to take pictures of it next time i see it

 

turns out what i thought was tractor paint was just an oil based enamel designed for industrial uses

 

You should totally look into fleet paint. Only certain places sell it and you gotta sweet talk them into selling it to the general public.

When I priced regular automotive paint I cringed and told the guy I was just painting a farm truck and need something affordable.

He said "well I guess I can get you some fleet paint that we use on semis and emergency vehicles."

With the hardener it was like 100 bucks. And you don't need primer.
