Whats behind an 06 front bumper

im trying to mount some light to the front of my truck without making a whole tube bumper. just making some tabs off the frame near the tow hooks will work, but the lights are kinda low. i want to mount them about a 1/2 inch or an inch above the top of my bumper. well it seems as if there is some kinda metal support behind the cheap plastic bumper but i caint get my hand in there nor can i see it. so the quetion is... is it hollow and does it unbolt from the truck. cause what id like to do is just drill a hole through the plastic and through the metal to put a light bar on the top of my bumper. so does anyone know whats behind there? would this be possible??

thanks JOSH

PM Fx4wannabe01, he made some light tabs for a 06 Ranger.

06fx4 L2 08-20-2008 07:18 PM

ok i will do that. but did the ones he make come out the front of the bumper near the tow hooks?

04blackedge 08-20-2008 07:19 PM

Yep, they looked really cool. Let me see if I can find a pic.

Used my old light tabs, got a longer top horizontal towhook bolt. threaded a nut for a spacer, then the tab, then the final nut. If the tabs were properly made for his application, it would have worked out a whole lot better. The mount we used is roughly the same size as the ones that Wayne @ Underdog sells. For proper fitment, the long part should be about .500" longer. Heck, .750" longer.

(sorry to steal your thunder there, cory.) lol.

ya thats alittle too low for what im looking for. thats what i was going to do at first, then i was going to make a tube coume out from that bolt and go above the bumper. but i think it may look goofy.. what i would like them to be is just as tall as the ford emblem mounted on top of the bumper or some kinda bracket. for looks and because i seem to go through bushes a lot and they will just get bead down there.

only way youre gonna be able to do that and still have it look decent is make a custom bumper or get a fabtech light bar. I used to have one of those and it was decent, bolted right on to the bumper.

The bar protects the lights pretty good too.

Your only other option is like a brush guard or custom.

06fx4 L2 08-20-2008 07:50 PM

08xlt4x4 did you mount your light bar?? cause i see that it bolts right through the plastic bumper like i was trying to do..!!! and are those hella 500's?

JOSH

04blackedge 08-20-2008 07:51 PM

I'm almost sure taht the plastic is just a bumper covering, theres metal underneath.

06fx4 L2 08-20-2008 08:03 PM

yes i know that, BUT how do you get a nut onto the bolt.. does the bumper and bumper covering come off together so id be able to drill and put a nut and bolt through? or do i need to drill the holles weld a nut onto the metal bumper and put it all backtogether then bolt it up?? know what i mean

04blackedge 08-20-2008 08:07 PM

Ok if I'm misunderstanding you I apoligize. Why can't you just drill straight throught the top of the bumper then come up from underneath the bumper and attach the nut to a bolt coming through the top? You can always take the bumper off but I think thats unnecessary. And yes the bumper cover should come off with the bumper.

That is my blue truck... I actually made another light bar that goes from the L-angle steel mounts that shane made me so I can mount 4 lights. Yes there is thin sheet metal under the plastic bumper cover.

You can actually send it straight to Photobucket from your phone, I do it all the time. I have Verizon btw.

06fx4 L2 08-20-2008 09:14 PM

cory07ranger4x4 08-20-2008 09:33 PM

yeah I didn't know you could send it to photobucket from verizon?? I forgot I can send it to your email from my phone. I'm just at work and on the laptop so all of my pics are on my home computer and I just snapped a quick pic of the bar I made that mounted to the tabs. He can post it on here once he gets the pic. If I was at home, I would of posted it no prob.

04blackedge 08-20-2008 09:34 PM

Yep you sure can, go to My Account on photobucket and it will give you the address to send it to. I use it all the time.

06fx4 L2 08-20-2008 10:07 PM

ok thanks!! so does that just reach all the way down to the l brackets or is there a piece that comes up and around the bumper also? not really important but i`m curious

cory07ranger4x4 08-20-2008 10:19 PM

The bottom lights mount regularly on the L-brackets like how shane made em and I made this to mount to the side of each L-bracket and grinded about half of the new bracket off in the spot where the bumper would of hit it if it wasn't ground down. I would just make the L-brackets a little longer so you could just weld the new bracket part onto the side but extended out a little farther so you didn't have to grind part of the new bracket off to clear the bumper. Does that make any sense??
