Once in warms up i will be building a front bumper. i dont have a welder and air tools but at the girls farm there are tools i can use. except a welder. i know i know a 90 amp isnt the greatest but thats what im getting. limited funds. what do u think about this

I understand you don't have funds, but personally, I'd pay a shop to weld it up before getting that welder. If you can draw up a blue print and cut all the pieces to size, a welding shop won't charge you that much to put it all together. Probably about as much as that welder and it'll much higher quality. If you don't plan on fabbing up a lot of stuff, I'd go this route.

Otherwise, like the saying goes, you get way you pay for. You might be able to get the thing to hold together using that HF welder, but it'll probably break quickly (welder and piece you welded), you won't have consistent weld patterns, etc. Plus to not even have the option of moving up to gas I think is a bad idea. Personally, if I had to go with a 110V welder as cheap as possible, I'd hunt Craigslist for old 110V Miller (see a Miller 120 for $500 near me). Or go with something like this:

Gives you the option of going MIG later.

 

I don’t want to talk down anybody’s choices but just buy a good quality, name brand and it should last you a long time for a lot of projects.

 

i went to a local welder, and he said if i draw him a blueprint of the bumper and cut out all the peices he will tig all of it for $50. So i think this is a steal.

Yep. Like I said, most of the work for welding stuff together comes from the prep work. If you do all the hard work, a welder will happily slap that thing together.

Speaking personally, welding is the fun part. I'm just finishing up my MIG certification this semester and will probably start on TIG after that. If I just got to weld all the time, it'd be great. But 90% of a project is cutting pieces to the right size, making sure it's fitted together right, tacking it together, and checking measurements again. Once you finally get all that done, you get to weld it together.

 

not only that but welding isnt easy. Like ya, after some practice you can get decent welds, but when it comes to what your doing, that is where the skill comes in. And since you have never welded before, best to leave it up to those that have.

yea ik its a great deal. im collecting card board now. im not sure how thick i want to go. i don't want it extremely heavy but i want it to be able to take a hit

 

Im building my rear out of 3/16 it seems like it will take a pretty good hit. I think 1/4 would be to much weight. but it all depends on how much inside support you have too.
