"ranch hand" style bumper
"ranch hand" style bumper
hopefully today, maybe tomorrow ill be aquiring some 6" steel pipe from Graniteguy, and when i do.. im gonna use the body lift rear bumper lift brackets, cut a notch in them, and weld the 6" pipe to it... and wah-bam i have a mean a$$ bumper
im kinda contimplating filling it w/ cement.. but that would b a bit excessive, on the other hand it would help w/ traction
then when its on ill be getting 2 of those weld-on d-rings and putting them on the pipe directly behind where its mounted to the frame...
any insight on this before hand?
-Matt
one catch... idk if anyone has heated up cement before w/ a torch.. it pops/explodes so that could pose as a problem if i fill the pipe w/ cement then weld on it?

prolly would be what almost 5 gallons of air....
I would make some stronger brackets, I haven't seen body lift brackets, but they can't be but like 3/16" thick... and the pipe is going to weigh alot as is. I dont think they will stand much of a chance in an accident, and isn't that a point of ranch hand bumpers?
I dunno, if he's using something as beefy as 6 inch pipe, he might as well make some heavy dudy brackets. It will only be a strong as the weakest link, which in this case are the brakets, even the stockers are wimpy compaired to what hes mounting to it.
i was gonna bolt the brackets to the frame. then weld them to it too.. and some cross braces..
i just dont have access to like place 1/4" steel.. the brackets have to be between 1/8 and 1/4.. they rnt thin.. hell they are thicker then the stock ones..
im also thinking about putting a cap on one end, or both and using it to store like chain, a crow bar, etc...
as for the air storage.. i kinda want it up in my frame not exposed.. its a cheap easy way.. but its also gonna be more likely to have the hose torn off or something?
keg is one idea, i wanted to make the bottom half of my tool box a keg at one time..
but cement would be ultimate! fkn thing would weigh like 200 lbs!
then if it does break bc i get hit.. it will f more up
hell one more idea..
everyone was giving wayne crazy ideas for his rear pipes.. what if i made mine like a quick detachment so i could like drop it goin 70 down the highway if im being chased by bad guys?

i got it on.. but my tac welds were too big? i gotta take a grinder w/ a cut off wheel to something so i can get the pipe back off... need to cut it a little ,finish welding it up, make sure it wont come off at 65 mph(could be hella bad), grind it, paint it, any touch up work
the thing must weigh 150+lbs as is.. forget the cement idea

My best friend's brother did this to his F-250 a while back. I'm trying to get pics for you. FWIW, may I suggest only bolting the tube/bumper to the frame and not welding it on? I'll have to find a thread about this that Griggs posted. I replied with links from a full size bronco forum regarding custom bumpers and welding or just bolting them.
Frame Flex = bolt flex
Frame flex + welds + bolts = cracked welds + sheared bolts + no bumper.

I personally don't that style bumper, but it is because of an accident I was in in '93 when a drunk pulled out in front of my familys brand new full size conversion van and we hit him. He had a bumper like that and it tore up the van(his rear tire bouncing up on the hood didn't help either), but it smashed up my moms ankle, 2 surgeries and 13 years later it still hurts her.
It will look aiight when it's finished, I would hate to see the car that rear ends you! I think my rear bumper would have a similar effect.
