I want to get a tiregate made soon, so i just started working on some designs for it, i decided to go with the VT series style instead of the PreRunner. just messing around on AutoCAD this is what i came up with
the frame of it and hinges are probably going to change when i get proper mesaurements and can find a decent style hinge to use, probably the same as tiregate uses. I also wanted to change the way the tire mounts, instead of the 3 lugs i wanted to do just a thick threaded rod in the middle with one of those "Y" handles or whatever they are called, just to make it easier for removal and putting it on.
i took some measurements off stock tailgate and figured 18.5" tall, and 53.25" wide. I might make it out of 2" square tubing either 1/8" thick or 3/16" thick, just depends how strong it has to be to hold a tire, and what material i can get easier. plus my rear bumper is made out of 2" square.
if anyone has some measurements they can give me, hinges i can use, or things that should be changed/added to the design im open to all suggestions.
i'm also going to be putting a Hi-Lift mount on top

Yeah, I grabbed some photo's for you - shoudl tide the design look over until I can get measurements - have work in ~20 minutes so I have to hop off an get ready.. on emoment whiel they finish uploading.. Ill edit this post when they do =)
The hinge uses some hard silicone gasket style washers in between the frame, and the gate - then you put a small amount of lube in between to make sure it wont bind (Ive opened this many times and its still as good as the day I got it)
The bar in the middle is a crimp-style bar - you have the two bolts on either end that you use to clamp the middle bar down after its installed, helps keep everything in place. Might be able to get away with a solid mounted bar - this jsut makes installation easier.
As you can tell from the tiremount - its pushed back from the gate several inches by a support bar and bracket setup - then the plate is welded to that.. woudl be very easy to install one of those Y shaped giant threaded clamp things for installing tires. Would need a hoop welded to the back liek in the pictures, to run a security wire through - I picked up the one I have at walmart for 20 bucks, real thick cable as thick as my thumb, and a heavy duty weatherproof lock to go with it.

nice, those hinges are actually pretty easy to make, id just have to find some sort of bushing. the security lock, i may just drill a hole through the threaded rod and put a lock through it so the only way to get it off is to cut.

thats pretty sweet for paint haha. im not sure what i want to do anymore, go all out tiregate, or just do a swing out jimmy style and keep my stock tailgate...but im still thinking tiregate.

i remember when i was younger and was always having pipe dreams of what i wanted my bronk to be. i always drew out a rear bumper/tailgate storage thing.

I made a tailgate for my truck a long time ago, and I filled the opening with expanded metal. My used the stock pivots pits and latches. I made mine so I had better viability when backing up to trailers or over cars lol
It was on my 2wd for a while, but I put it on my 4x4 so I could see things that were in the 10 foot blind spot behind me lol

Do you have ANY knowledge about Rangers? When you fit a bigger tire than the stock spare size in that location, let us all know please.

along with every other company that sells trucks BUT just wait until YOU wanna fit a 32inch+ tire in there, good luck! youll see this thread again...

. so i am seriously thinking about building one of these.. i do have a question though.. when the gate is close how does it latch?? i would use the original mounting hardware also like you did.
It latches just like stock, they are the stock latches in the stock location. Just measure how far from the center of the hinge they are on the stock one, then use the same spacing on your new gate. you have to cut a 1x1.25 hole to slip them trough the metal, then drill the two 5/16 holes for the bolts.

a 35" tire doesn't exactly fit there, with a hitch, the 235/75/15 barely fits there.
i cant decide now if i want to go full gate or jimmy style (keep tailgate and have a gate over it)
