4.0 OHV supercharger
4.0 OHV supercharger
How would I go about supercharging my 4.0 with stock internals? What supercharger would I need and what do I need to buy to make it work? Would it even be worth it or should just throw upgraded externals on it like intake/throttle body/exhaust headers on it and call it a day? I've got a limited budget, just trying to make my truck more fun than she already is
If you are racing in a 4 liter limited division that allows turbo or super charging then its worth while, but also need to change some of the internals to use max boost, or why bother
Morana racing sells parts for 4.0l ohv AND sohc, seen here: Tom Morana Racing Engines
Make sure you are looking at OHV parts not OHC parts
If you are just looking at more power for street use then the 302 V8 conversion is more practical, and way more upgrades for 302 V8 and cheaper

Air = power in any internal combustion engine
A 5 liter engine has more power than a 4 liter engine because if can use more air on each RPM, literally as simple as that
If you just add more fuel you get a Flooded engine not more power
Super or turbo chargers force in more air(boost) so engine can produce more power
NOS injection adds more air so more power can be produced
Any engine is engineered to hold up to its rated power output and maybe 20% more
So if you are just increasing power by 10-15% then you should be fine
i.e. 200HP engine running at 230HP would be fine, 15, at 240HP, 20%, you would be at/pushing the limit
This is when you need to look at changing internal engine parts to handle the higher power
It doesn't matter where the extra power comes from, super/turbo or NOS if its over 20% increase stock engine issues can occur
And unless engine is brand new there could be other issues at play so even 10% increase could be an issue, lol
"There is no replacement for displacement"
Larger engine for more power is always the better choice
Or smaller engine(4cyl) built for higher power, it has best MPG and better "bang for your buck" as far as cost of extra HP
V6 engines just are not the greatest to add extra power to
