Tranny dilema.

I am finally getting around to buying another ranger. I am looking at newish 06-07 FX4's with low kilometers (30-50k). I really have not put much thought into Supercharging but it is a growing interest. My biggest dilemma right now is whether I am picking up a manual or automatic. Is there a clear winner in terms of strength or durability between the two? The automatic would probably need some tuning I'd imagine after the install but I have heard some people claim the the manual is a pretty weak transmission. I'm looking for more knowledge on the subject.

Well just judging by how Ford rates the towing capacities the auto would be stronger. But it's hard telling. A built 5r55e can handle a good amount of power and shift faster than what an manual would. Zabeard has a supercharged 4.0 with a built auto trans and NicksterSVT had one as well. Both held up well.

The 5r44e that comes with the 3.0 is rated for 440 lbs. of torque and the 5r55e that comes with the 4.0 is rated for 550 lbs. of torque.
With a little tuning you can really make these tranny's shift firm.

If you did a Supercharger you would need a tune either way Auto or Manual trans.
My truck see's a lot of boat ramp action so the auto was a no brain'er for me.

89,000 miles with a lot of towing and Nitrous runs.NO PROBLEMS
