2.3 turbo coupe motor in a 98????
Hey guys I just joined the site. On sunday I am going to virginia to go get my ranger project. It is a 98 ranger. It has no motor or trans. The motor that was in it was a 2.5 5 speed. My main question is has anyone ever done this swap into a 98 body style?? Will I just have to replace the wiring harness and computer with the one out of the turbo coupe? Oh yea its a 88 turbo coupe by the way. And one more question....The turbo coupe has a t-5 tranny with it, that is used with a cable. And the ranger is hydraulic....Should I just take the pedal assembly out of the t-bird and put it in the ranger? Or should I find a hydraulic 5 speed?? Thanks.

id grab an 87-88 turbocoupe bell housing and associated parts. very simple to re-use the ranger hydro setup that way. if yours has a cable, its either not an 88, or the trans has been changed over.
since your truck has no motor/trans, i would jus swap all the needed wiring from the TC to the truck to run the new motor. what kinda engine swap regulations do you hafta deal with for emissions checks and stuff?

if you have to have emissions checks on it, you most likely wont pass when you eliminate the OBD2 system by going to the old OBD 1 system. A lot of the emissions checks on 95 and up vehicles they just do by plugging into the OBD2 port which wont work if the original computer is gone...
as for the clutch system, stick with the hydraulic setup as setting up a cable system into the ranger can be a pain and you already have all the parts for the hydraulic system. like was mentioned the 87-88 turbocoupe bellhousing is a hydraulic bellhousing and would work perfectly for you.
If you can find a manual tranny computer and wiring harness for the 95-01 4-cylinder then it may be worth running the modern sensors including a single coil pack and eliminating the distributor and keep it an OBD2 computer and get a tuner and have the engine tuned on a dyno. It's relatively inexpensive to get a vehicle tuned and the MAF system is FAR superior to the MAP/Vane air system that was use on the turbocoupes.

I have no emissions where I live....The motor was orrigonally an auto. My bro converted the car to a t-5. If I cannot find a hydrolic tranny I may have to throw the auto in it....gay.........Cause I dont know if there is gona be room to put the mustang pedal assemble in it since the truck is body droped 5 inches.
I guess I will try to see if the pedal assembly will fit first though before i go auto. Also do you think that I will have to have a driveshaft made? Thanks guys for all your replys

all you need to go hydraulic is the bellhousing from an 87-88 TC and the slave/fork, not the entire tranny. grab the haydraulic line too as the ends can be reused.
i actually ran an 84 ranger line on my first turboranger T5 swap. it fit the chassis(obviously) and had the proper ends to match the TC slave.

yes if you find a 87-88 hydro bell from a TC and associated parts, you can reuse your current T5 in the same configuration as it is now. since it was a swap, do you know if it is a 4banger T5 or a v8?

clear as mud?
