$400 to mount up new tires HAHA..
#27
i mounted up some 35s at discount the other day and they didnt charge any extra. Big tires are easy. Its runflats and lo profile tires that are a pain in the ***

Yeah that is true.. understandable.. For me finding a place to mount them up for "cheap" is going to be a challenge... lol

WOW, tire shops you have locally must really suck! go and talk to the manager of the place that quoted you $400 to mount and balance, and tell him what a crock that is!
the shop i used to work at, mount and balance was the same price if you bought the tires from us, the tires and wheels from us, only the wheels from us, or brought them all in loose.
the only thing that was different and charged accordingly was custom wheel balancing.
why would a shop be liable if they are mounting up brand new tires on brand new wheels, then bolting them on the truck?

lol I bought 4 tires, had them mounted and balanced for a little over $400 at walmart. That was for my general grabber tires on my ranger now.
If you do go to walmart make sure to take a hammer and tap all the weights on real good when you get home. If i didnt then I would have to take the wheels back to get balanced within a week because the weights would fall off.

I've dealt with dealers and shops before that simply didn't want to deal with anything that wasn't stock. If it didn't leave Detroit that way, then it don't belong here was their policy. I'm the same way with some things.
I had a guy down the road get mad at me after I refuse to help him chop up the frame on his new Ranger and install some sort of lowering kit. I wasn't interested and it's not my thing. Besides, I'm not a repair shop or custom shop.
On the tires, go someplace that deals strictly with aftermarket 4x4 or larger trucks. The average service station won't know what to do with those bigger tires.
And, no offense, but would you really want a Walmart employee working on your truck?
(I once watch a local Sears guy rip both doors off of a car after lifting it between two beams overhead, he didn't let off the lever till he felt the door glass falling on his head, and another with in minutes of the first incident, pull the rear wheels off of a front drive wagon which caused it to dump forward off the lift onto a tool box and finally onto it's side). I took one of my old cars there for tires which were on sale and watched the guy running the wheel balancer mis-balance the tires not knowing how to read the balancer results. The car shook so bad when he was done I almost couldn't drive it. When I got home, I pulled all the wheel weights off so I could drive to work. It was nearly perfect with no weights at all. I rebalanced all four wheels at work myself the next day. (The sale didn't apply to carry out tires and mount and balance was free and the sale price was below the cost of the tires where I worked).

I didnt at first but i had a couple people tell me they did ok but just took a wile, and they had the tire for the cheapest i had found. I have to say though I will NEVER buy tires from there again. They suck *** at balancing tires and it takes them literally all day to do a set of tires. I have taken the truck back 3 times to get the tires rebalanced (took around 4 hours every time). I found that they never put all the weights all the way on so they end up getting thrown off. The 3rd time I took it in as soon as they were done I pulled a hammer out and started tapping the weights on better and I haven't had a problem since. They dont seem to damage any cars here, just slow as bloody hell....

Personally, I solved the tire mounting problem years ago here, I bought my own tires machine and wheel balancer about 10 years ago. After the dealer I was at closed up, I bought a lot of the shop equipment at auction for cheap. Not that it will do any really huge tires but I can mount some pretty wide tires. The FMC computer balancer isn't much for big off road tires though, it does the job but I doubt it's accuracy. The tire machine is an older 40-53A which was modified to handle extra wide tires, so it can do those super wide slicks. It actually has some trouble with smaller car tires if I don't pull the lower shims. The only problem I've ever had doing any of the really big tires was getting them to seat. I had a set of 42" tires off a buddies F350 that fought me something terrible, I ended up buying one of those Cheetah blasters to get them inflated.

First of all this thread is like 3 months old hahah, second rangerskippy just bring them somewhere else like Walmart or something I had mine done for $60 at VIP, and put them on the truck myself when they were done mounting and balancing. Or just find a friend with a tire mounter, NBD. It's just for liability issues thats why some places are so picky about it.. which in my opinion is retarded, but hey what can you do...

yay for working at a shop with a tire machine
my buddy came in and I put on 2 tires for him, he had to pay the shop but it was only $40 for 2 tires, $80 for all 4, still better than Discount wanting $90 for 2

I am going to post up and keep this old thread alive for just one more post. Haha!
Just wanted to throw it out there that you may want to be careful going to Wal-Mart. My buddy bought two 31's for his 4runner a while back from them and had them mount and balance them. Well, when he picked the truck back up like 5 hours later, they had used a hammer on one of his aluminum wheels and dented it up something terrible. I forget how much he ended up getting from them, but it was only like 50 bucks or something. Not worth it for a ruined wheel if you ask me. Just thought I would throw that out there.

I called up my local tire dealership today and asked if they carried mickey thompson baja radial mtz's which of course they didn't all they carry is one brand of tire which is herculies. I asked the guy how much it would cost me if I bought these tires online and brought them to him to mount. He told me 100 bucks a tire. I was like wtf are you kidding.. sucks too because I wanted to get a set of the baja radials now I think im stuck with bfg all terrains which was my second option. 100 bucks a tire f you. I don't know of any people around me who can't mount my tires either so that isn't an option.. Should I just settle for the all terrains?
