‘98 Ranger 4x4 GEM Replacement

Have a short & need to replace the GEM.

Now as I understand it I need to match F87B-14B205-** when finding a replacement GEM. The ** are just the build date, so not important. It seems like the GEMs are year specific as the pins wont match on anything but a ‘98?

Do I need to match the “4x4” & “pick-up” as well? My pick n pull has plenty of same year explorers but no Rangers for me to match. So I have access to cheap “sports utility” GEMs but would need to wait or pay for a “pick-up” GEM or scour the inter-webs for something cheaper.

Am I correct?

The EE is not a build date, its a revision code and important in GEMs

"F87B"
F8 = 1998
7 = Ranger
B = Ford department

"14B205" = part number for ANY Body Computer from any Ford model in any year

EE = revision but in this case also the software used because its a "computer"

The GEM is the BCM(body control module), first used in 1995 Rangers, change to Smart Junction Box in 2004 Rangers, but both were BCMs

In any case, yes it needs to be from a 4x4 with the same options, i.e. power windows door locks if you have that
And 1998 to 2000 only because GEM also provided the Speed Signal in those 3 years

Try https://www.car-part.com/
Use
1998
Ford Ranger
Computer Box not Engine
YOUR Zipcode

SEARCH

Then select "multifunction 4x4 ID F87B-14B205-EE"

SEARCH

1998 or 1999 Ranger or Mazda B-series are fine to use, engine size or transmission type doesn't matter
