2004 4.0 Ranger 4x4 not working
2004 4.0 Ranger 4x4 not working
Hello All, I've replaced the transfer case shifter motor, the transfer case control module behind the radio, the 4x4 switch and checked fuse 27. Everything that I can think of is done. The Ranger's 4x4 broke when I was going up a hill with my log splitter. I put the truck into neutral once I had momentum and switched it back into 2wd so that by the time I got to the flat surface, it would've already had time to switch back to 2wd and I could just put her in 1st and go. The little clicking for the module is not working. The 4x4 light lights up when I turn the ignition on and then goes off. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks
With ParkBrake engaged + WheelsBlocked & on JackStands as needed for clearance,
remove 4x4ShiftMotor (4 Bolts) from 1354 TCase body; should be able to easily rotate TCase stem using ViceGrips out of 4WHi to 2WHi?
If you can't do this, something inside TCase broke. If you can, something with ShiftMotor\ConMod\Fuses\Switch\Wiring is messed up.
With 4x4ShiftMotor off of TCase but still plugged into harness, with Engine idling & Trans in Neut,
have someone slowly operate 4x4Switch from 2WHi~4wHi~4WLo & back again.
If ShiftMotor rotates properly, ShiftMotor is likely starting to fail & getting weak, needs replacement.
If ShiftMotor does not rotate proper, ConMod(most common failure item) or Wiring or Fuse or Switch(least common failure item) is likely problem.
PS: While doing above,
consider draining+refilling 1354 TCase with fresh ATF, if it hasn't been done in last 33kMiles\4Yrs;
preference here is MerconLV.FullSyn Valvoline#MaxLifeMultiVehicle\Equal.
Best to briefly exercise TCase+ShiftMotor+ConMod once a month to make sure its working & keep ShiftMotor from getting crusty,
by shifting thru all 3 modes & driving at least a short distance in each.

Welcome to the forum
Have to use a 2001-2005 4x4CM(control module), later models won't work
The 4WD lights on dash come on as a Bulb Test, all the other bulbs should do that as well, not a test of any systems, just the bulbs
There are a few more fuses besides the TWO fuse 27s(one in cab fuse box the other in engine bay fuse box)
Diagram below shows fuses
