2004 Ford Ranger Edge 4x2

So I am looking to get a Ford Ranger. I found this one on Craigslist locally. I'm getting mixed reviews on the actual value of the vehicle considering it's age.

The truck overall is extremely clean—the inside is like new. The outside has a few blemishes/scratches, and a little sun damage. It doesn't have a bedliner, and it's not 4x4, but it does have the side step bars.

Here is the post:
https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/6000413223.html

He is wanting $9400. I've got him down to $8900. I looked on KBB, and the value is closer to $6/7k for Clean condition. The owner is basing his numbers off of the NADA, which does seem to value it a bit higher than KBB.

I also posted to a Ford Ranger Reddit, and received 5 posts stating that it was way overpriced. I figured I'd try and find some enthusiasts, to see if I can get another opinion.

I don't believe the owner is trying to rip anyone off, but I also don't necessarily want to pay $8900 for a 13 year old car.

The details that aren't in the post are that it was originally bought by his neighbor, and older lady. It mostly sat under a carport for a while. Then is spent a few years parked by the curb. About 40k miles were put on it prior to the current owner (their neighbor) purchasing it. He purchased for his son, but then his son ended up taking a free truck from his grandfather. The owner has been driving it most days, and has put an additional 2k miles on it. He changed the oil and put on new tires.

Thoughts? What should I offer? Is $8900 good for spending it's life in TX—and considering it sat around for a while? Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

It looks like a great truck, and definitely looks clean. However considering I bought my similarly optioned 2003 back in 2010 for less than what you offered, it's a bit high.

At the end of the day, you have to think about whether this is the truck for you. The low mileage is definitely a plus, as mine had 42,000 miles when I bought it and I'm still driving the truck six years later and just recently hit 122,000 miles. If it's been well maintained, it could be a very good truck for a long time, as mine has been. Unfortunately you also have to consider who else is looking for a low mileage Ranger. Low mileage trucks like that one tend to get picked up as soon as they hit the market. You can't spend too much time haggling because you never know who is willing to pay him full price for that truck. If you decide to pick it up, just make sure it's in great mechanical shape and you should be good to go.

Thanks. males since. He hasn't had much action.

indrive it and looked at it. No reason to believe it's not great. Just got some feedback on price, bit the guy is being reasonable.

Any thoughts on the fact that it spent a lot of time just sitting there? A few years of that time not in a carport.

It really looks clean and sounded good.. Suspension seem good. I need to take it over some bumps.

thanks.

Mine only had less than 5,000 miles in 2008. Which means from 2003-2008, it basically sat more than it drove. The third owner put an additional 37k on it in the two years before I bought it. The fact that it sat never gave me any issues in the time that I've owned the truck.

What anything is "worth" is decided by the BUYER, period
"Asking price" is set by the seller.

"Price guides" for used cars can be all over the map, because BUYERS are all over the map, literally, lol.
Even "regional" guides are off

One person can pay $9,000 and another $7,000 for the exact same vehicle on the exact same day.
The buyer at $9,000 can be very happy he got a good deal, the one that paid $7,000 might complain he got ripped off for the next 10 years.
Thats just people

All that being said, that $9,400 for an '04 Ranger Edge seems pretty steep.
Yes, the $6/7,000 range looks more reasonable

Walk away but leave your number

Update. That Ranger is still available and I may go and pick it up today. With that said, I did find a 03 Tacoma... they're all over priced locally—I think they are everywhere. Trying to decide between the two of them since I know the Tacos are supposed to be bullet proof.

With that said, the guy with the Ranger has come down significantly in price. 8400.

The Tacoma has 126k vs 42, but many look at that as just breaking them in. The guy wants 9500... not crazy go a Taco in Austin, but definitely steep and over priced. They all are.

Taco:

And the Ranger again:

I'm leaning towards the Ranger still, but is it worth a bit more $$ for the Toyota?

The Tacoma's get consistent high reliability marks from owners, that being said the 150,000 mile marker is when any vehicles will start to need repairs.
O2s for sure
Chassis bushings and bearings
nickle and dime stuff in general

Transmission, clutch or rebuild at 200k is not unexpected

Tacoma's in my area are priced higher than Rangers of similar year, miles and options

Well, I own a Ranger

I went with the Ranger.

The one I got is just in such good condition w/ such low mileage. The inside looks brand new, and the outside basically looks brand new.

The most affordable Tacoma I could find was in okay condition, but no comparable, not to mention it had 126k miles already—meaning I have almost a 100k miles to catch up w/ the Ranger, and that'll take me years!

The Rangers look good too, and have a stronger frame. I'm probably going to add a bed liner. That's for all the info and opinions.
