2005 3.0 manual swap

2005 3.0 manual swap

i have a 2wd 2005 ford ranger 3.0 v6 with an automatic thats starting to have issues, instead of putting in a new automatic for it i was hoping i could do a manual swap, how hard is it? What will i need?

And if you're more of a visual person (not a step by step video, but it does go over most of what you'll need for an OEM style swap).

he states 2004 and up rangers are a bit more difficult, whys that? I have a 2005

The person in the video was not familiar with swapping anything newer than a 2003 when he made that video. (I'm the one who made the video, lol)

I've personally helped swap a couple of newer trucks since then including my fellow moderator's 2005, so I can assure you there are no huge differences. Since your truck is a 2005, it will not have PATS (SecuriLock) so that makes the swap a little easier.

Thats Good to know! How long did it take? Can it be a pain in the *** or is pretty straight forward? I have a decent amount of knowledge with vehicles but havent done a transmission yet.

It's pretty straight forward. I got mine done within a weekend. Tore the transmission out Friday night and had it running and driving by mid afternoon on Sunday. The biggest thing I can suggest is to make sure you have everything you need, and make sure you have a game plan. There are a couple ways you can do the swap (Using the stock auto computer versus finding a manual computer with matching keys and locks) so you need to figure out which one will work best for you. Having Ford flash the computer is basically out of the question, I have seen a few people try that and they always get turned down.

I’ll definitely take your word on having a game plan, im planning on getting a donor truck so ill have everything i need there, I appreciate the advice man
im feeling a little more optimistic about this whole transplant thinng haha i just have a really well maintained truck with a junk slushbox at 134k ( itll probably last another 15k miles)

A donor truck is definitely the best way to do it. Piecing the parts together kinda sucks. You're lucky yours made it that far, mine went out at 78,000. I had problems with it when I first bought it at 42,000 so I had a long standing hatred for the auto.

Swapping to the manual was the best thing I've done to my truck, and just about everybody who has done the swap to their truck has told me the same.

i just finished watching your video, now i got a good insight on what to do now, thanks I appreciate it


yeah thats why im going with the manaul route i read nothing good about the autos and i wanna keep this truck for a long time, im the 2nd owner and the previous owner was and old man so its mint. I wish it had 4x4 Its got everything else besides cruise control (is it possible to add?) Your ranger is the one to get tho, i love the white edge stepsides

Glad the video helped you.

Cruise control is definitely possible, but it might be pretty involved. I would recommend picking up a copy of the 2005 wiring diagrams for your truck so you can kinda see what it takes to control it.
