I am in the process of purchasing a 2006 Ford Ranger Edge V6. The vehicle is owned by a family friend and has only had one owner. It has roughly 162,000 miles on it and has had regular maintenance. After taking it to a trusted mechanic it needs the following replaced or worked on :
Sway bar end links
Drive belt
Outer Tie rod
Wheel bearings (might just need tightening)
Tail shaft seal
My mechanic is saying the immediate repairs total around $500. He says everything else looks to be in great working order and in good condition. We are paying $1,500 in cash for the truck. It certainly has some cosmetic wear and tear but overall Im pretty pleased with the deal! I will be working on home repairs/mods over the coming year or so. It has a small rust spot in the bed and on the back near the tailgate. It also needs a bed liner really bad. Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated!!
Nice snag! My 05 Edge 3.0 has been really good to me (even when I gripe). Is it an automatic? If you take care of the fluid, that'll probably take you a long way.

Yeah automatic. Anything to look out for? Any mods you recommend? I am thinking about putting some Herculiner in the bed.
There is a decent amount of scratches and issues on the exterior I want to address eventually.
I'm pretty new to all this myself; especially on the transmission. If your transmission fluid isn't burned out already, doing a regular transmission fluid change (pan-drop, or just replacing 4 qts/litres) at regular intervals is a good thing to do. (You can also change the transmission fluid through the transmission cooler lines: https://www.ranger-forums.com/how-di...-flush-137565/) (Again, if the fluid is already burned out, you probably don't want to mess with the fluid, so you'd want to check that) A lot of folks recommend a larger-than-stock transmission cooler. I don't myself have one, but I'd like to. As for the engine itself, the usual things to watch out for on the 3.0, e.g. CMP synchronizer (if even I can replace it, anyone can: https://www.ranger-forums.com/how-di...-3-0-a-137358/) and the timing cover gasket (mine went abruptly, along with a valve cover gasket.... it's fixed now). It's been a good engine, and a good transmission, and if I'd never driven overloaded through the Rockies in a heat wave both the engine and tranny would be happier than they are right now - and they're still relatively fine!
I would do a transmission filter & fluid .
I would change oil to Pennzoil Platnium with a Wix Filter.
I would check the differential fluid level. I would pull rear tires and drums. Rinse out all the dust. Look for axle seal leaks and brake cylinder leaks.
I would look at his history. Spark plugs, coolant changes.
the sway link rubbers- that’s easy.
I have an 05 Edge 4 x 4 with a 4.0. 174000.
Doing good so far, despite all them timing chains.
Thats why I run slick oil, Penn Platnium.
I have the 8.8 rear LS. And the LS clutches are still good. Takes 30 ft lbs to overcome them.
did axles, bearings, seals, and the spider gears cross pin. New.
Your bearings up front should be hub assemblies.
They do fail. There is no tightening. It’s a replaceable assembly, about $ 186 per side for a good one.

This is only true for the 1998+ 4x4 trucks. All 4x2 1983-2011 Rangers have serviceable bearings. OP did not specify 4x2 or 4x4.
The linex folks quoted $650 for me due to some rust in the bed. I am getting the rust done locally and I purchased some Hurculiner roll on bed liner to do myself.
I got another rhino liner spray in quote this morning for $400 with full warranty, from my local truck accessory dealer, yes, they will get my business. I have no interest in doing it myself. This same place that installed my (I board aluminum running boards) this morning as well.

Nice. I like the blue on your truck btw, looks good.
