2010 ranger xl... how secure are the transponder keys and the security system on a ranger getting stolen assuming no programmed keys are used... lets not talk about a tow truck.... i know that a tow truck can take it.

Rangers are not high on the list of stolen vehicles.
Not sure if it's true, but they say if you don't use the coded key, (at least the 2000 +)there is no way the truck will start

That's correct. Without programming a truck's computer to take the chipped key, it won't start it.... it can open the truck IF it's cut correctly, but it can't start it.
