4X4 Conversion or ELocker

Hey all,

I have a 02 Ranger Edge that is 2wd. It is a great truck with really low miles, and I like it a lot except for the terrible off road abilities. I am a poor college kid so I really don't have a whole lot of cash, but my major and interests take me some pretty remote places at times, and I would really like to have more confidence in not getting stuck. I have researched this forum a good bit about converting Edge's to 4wd, but I know that finding some of the parts are really hard and the conversion is pretty involved. I have a friend with a Toyota Prerunner and an electronic differential. My question is, how much difference will an electronic differential make on my ranger? Is getting a good one like the Eaton ELocker worth the $750 + install? Could an auto shop install on and about how much do they cost to install?

Thanks

What are the street handling charactaristics of the powertrax no slip? I have a manual transmission if that makes a difference. 99.9% of my driving is on the street after all.... How similar is this thing to the GMC G80 locking differential?

750+ install better include the price of the locker. It's the rear axle, accessible as hell.

I feel it should be stronger than the E locker, it's cheaper, easy to DIY install. I have an auto, it has great street manners. Manual might not be as good, but the Ranger has a longer wheel base compared to Jeeps, so that helps.

Might not be as good in snow as an open dif, but just don't drive like a moron and you'll be fine. When any type of locker in snow or slippery conditions, it will be easier to swap the ends around if you goose it too hard.
