87 ford ranger FM145 tranny shifter broke replaced won’t move

87 broke the plastic trapezoidal shaped shifter bought a new shifter from core Shifters installed now it won’t go in gear it feels like it’s shifting but nothing engages? Really puzzled

Are you sure it was the shifter that broke ?

Yes

The plastic part broke up at first it was just cracked then it broke up in pieces.
