98 ranger question
98 ranger question
I'm going to look at a senior owned 98 ranger extended cab 4x4 4.0l. Just curious if their is any known ranger problems to look for that I'm not aware of. Truck has zero rust and a cap on the back also. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you in advance

Welcome to the forum
1998 was first year of 3rd generation Rangers
1983-1992 1st gen, smaller
1993-1997 2nd gen, larger
1998- 2012 3rd gen, same size as 2nd but some styling changes
4.0l OHV engine was very reliable, used from 1990-2000, 2001 and up used 4.0l SOHC engine, more power but more problems.
1998-2000 Ranger 4x4s used PVH(pulse vacuum hubs) up front, they were a bad design, often failed to work(lock) when you needed 4WD, they didn't cause damage or anything just no 4WD.
They can be swapped out for manual hubs.
The 4x4 electric shift system didn't change much over the years, had its little issues but none were too hard to fix(except PVH Hubs)
Automatic transmissions are what they are, there is no "better" automatic, or worse, they need to be serviced and then rebuilt eventually
The Ranger manual transmissions were bullet proof.
Rear leaf spring hangers on all pickup trucks seem to rust out faster than on cars, just normal, have a look.
20 years old will mean rubber parts will be deteriorating, again this is just entropy at work, happens on all vehicles
Entropy - lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.

be aware old people owned trucks while look immaculate can be mechanical nightmares due to thier extremely short trips the engine trans rearend etc never warm up enough to burn the acids out of the oil that form. Listen to the engine very closely and auto trans die when they are shifted alot (ie slow in town driving) so do all the usual tests for slipping trans, hard shifts, etc. they also have the tendancy to ride the **** outa the brakes so check for warped rotors and signs of overheated brakes.
Also from experience while the outside of the truck will be immaculate the underside and brake lines will be rotted to hell as they cant get underthere and clean the salt outa them
