Have a 1999 Ranger.
speedo quit working yesterday at 1st drive, worked fine before that.
not the Speed Sensor, as I hooked up my OB reader and shows volts going to it(VSS) MPH ,and reads thru reader perfect m.p.h. while driving.
also has all ABS.
Checked fuse 14, good
HELP!
Thanks to all who respond

I show fuse #25 7.5amp for speedometer in dash

Do you have cruise control and does it work?

In 1998-2000 Rangers the rear ABS sensor is shared between ABS module and GEM Module(behind radio)

The GEM converts the 30,000ppm to the 8,000ppm signal the speedo, cruise and computer can use

Computer will set a P0500 code if it doesn't have speed signal, so no code means GEM is doing its job, computer is getting speed signal

So likely issue is in the dash

the cruise has been mostly removed many years ago by last owner.
It also has a ABS Light on that has been since I've had it. So what ive read on this forum, with the ABS light and no speedo, could be wiring connection underneath, where the drivers seat is.
also, no diagram came thru
ughhhh😔

If there was a wiring issue for the Rear ABS sensor then your OBD reader wouldn't show speed, because it does it means ABS sensor signal is going to the GEM, then converted by the GEM and sent out to computer(speedo, cruise) so you can view it on the OBD reader

The ABS module gets the same signal as GEM, its shared, but the wire to the ABS module could be bad at the splice point, but long shot

Do you have Rear ABS(RABS) or 4 wheel ABS(4WABS)?

Picture here of 4 wheel ABS unit in engine bay next to brake booster/master, hard to miss it: http://img.justparts.com/uImage/3164...A5519BE3B4.JPG

If you don't see this then you have Rear ABS

Me too

If the computer shows correct speed via OBD then all is well with speed sensor and GEM
So I think you will need to pull out the cluster and test the speedometer, you can use a AA battery on the speedo motor and it should show 72MPH
There is a video on that, youtube.com/watch?v=WVz6ilGiTBYGoogle:

I don't think the 4WABS light is related to speedometer issue, as you said its been on longer than speedo issue

You need a special scanner to read ABS codes, I would make a few calls to shops to ask "how much" to read the codes
Also just have a quick look at the front wheel ABS sensor wires, these can be damaged and that will turn on ABS light, you know its not the rear ABS sensor because speed signal is making it to computer

No, cluster needs to be plugged in or alternator will be off and you would be running off the battery, it would get drained and then a No Start

Cluster removal seen here: youtube.com/watch?v=-WGhIDxksjI
