I found this link for an air bypass valve and thought I should pass it along. I think this might be a viable option for our trucks, for the people who don't want a snorkel, but would like some insurance from hydo-lock when wheeling.

A lot of people use those on cars with aftermarket intakes. The intake I was going to get for the Jetta picked up air from about 6" above the ground, in front of the front left tire. Most people with that intake used the air bypass valve.

 

Has anyone ever considered just routing an intake pipe through the firewall to suck air from in the cab while crossing water?

I can imagine how loud that would be at all times though...

The little valve is good for low cars, but not very good for driving through standing water. can't really compare to a snorkle, because if you submerge that, you're still going to lock it up...

 

That product has been around for a long time. I remember when there was a manufacturing defect where they would fall apart and get stuck in the throttle body. On a truck it would be useless since the intake tube and airbox opening are pretty much at the same height. Well the airbox is a bit lower but not by much. If the water is high enough to get into the intake then it is probably high enough to get sucked in when this thing opens. It would work if you had an intake that took air in from a lower point like behind the valance but then any time you would do any kind of crossing you would soak the filter.

Yea, I wasn't sure if anyone had seen it or not. I was just throwin' it out there, obviously it wouldn't replace a snorkel. I have just been trying to think of easy ways to keep from hydro-locking with out running a line in the cab or a snorkel.

 

Actually I did put the intake into the dash on my Jeep, but it is strictly an off road vehicle. The only bad part is, now all I hear is the engine sucking air all the time.

Passenger: Hey thats a funny looking A/C vent. Why is it so loud though? I cant even feel it blowing...

If you had one of those turbo kits that bolts on after the headers (usually just behind the cab) you could simply make a big U out of your intake pipe (make a roll bar your intake pipe) and as long as the height from the top of the water to the top of the U is taller than than the maximum vacuum the engine can produce in inches of water then you are A-ok. Talk about a maze of piping, though. Of course, if you're gonna do all that just make the intake at the top of the roll bar and it acts as a snorkel. The only problem with that is if water splashes up and somehow makes contact with the hot internals of the turbo you've got issues almost as big as hydro lock.
