Welcome to the forum

Depends on the YEAR of the Ranger.
And what is "broken"

1995 and up Rangers use an electric speedometer and odometer, each has its own electric motor, there is just one signal wire to the instrument cluster with the "speed pulse" so they share that one signal
If speedometers electric motor is broken then odometer would still work
If the "speed pulse" is not there then neither would work

It’s a 1998 and Okay so I was thinking it was speed sensor short because speedometer stays at 0 but odometer works is it possible for it to send signal to odometer but not speedometer

No, not possible, only 1 wire from speed sensor to instrument cluster, speedo and odo both use it

In 1998 to 2000 Rangers the speed sensor is on the rear axle, ABS sensor, it runs to ABS module and to the GEM module(body computer) behind radio, GEM converts the 20,000PPM to the 8,000PPM speedo/odo, computer and cruise can understand

None of that is important at the moment, lol.

You will need to pull out instrument cluster and test speedo motor, short video here on that: youtube.com/watch?v=WVz6ilGiTBY

Also check the worm gear on odometer that was something that wore out on these

Read here: https://www.therangerstation.com/Mag..._worm_gear.htm

The above also has a how-to on taking instrument cluster out

I would also replace all 6 bulbs in cluster, just because they are 20 years old

Thanks a lot for the very informative reply I appreciate it !! The guy I am buying the truck from said he replaced the speed sensor but didn’t fix speedometer but when transmission acts up the check engine light comes on the od light flashes and abs and also the speedometer fluctuates for a second or two does that seem like a short causing transmission shift issues . He said if you put it in drive sometimes it won’t shift to second if he puts in in 2 then back to drive it shuts fine from there and only has issues on first start of drive

Speed sensor on rear axle--------/---------------------------------------GEM module---------------Dash/computer/cruise
ABS Module-------------------------/

ABS module connects direct to speed sensor and uses it 20,000ppm signal
GEM module gets the same 20,000ppm signal and changes it to an 8,000ppm signal that speedo/odo, computer and cruise understand

Yes, if speed signal drops out from GEM Module to dash, computer and cruise then the transmission will act up, speedometer would also act up, but hard to see odometer "drop out" for a second or two, it just doesn't move that fast

If speed sensor itself acts up the ABS light will also come on, along with the above dropouts

Transmission issues are not so simple to diagnose, yes speed sensor issue will cause shifting problems, but so will 20 other things more expensive than a speed sensor issue
