Battery Issues?

My 2002 Ranger 2.3L is having potential battery issues. The battery light came on a couple days ago. I checked the terminals and found corrosion on the positive connection. The truck needed a jump a day after, plus the battery light remained on. After driving a quarter mile the dash gauges stopped working. This was on my way to pick up food and in the drive through line the truck died. Got a jump from a kind stranger and the truck started. Unfortunately it quit again shortly thereafter. Is this a result of a battery failure or something more drastic like the alternator?

Welcome to the forum

Battery Light comes on when the alternator is not working or charging the Battery, so battery will get drained and car will shut off or not start

Battery light ON means battery is being drained, like when you first turn on the key before engine/alternator is running, Battery light is on because battery is being used to power all the electrics, like dash warning light and computer, radio, fan, ect.............
After engine starts alternator takes over so Battery light goes OFF because it is not being drained, used to power vehicle

Alternator needs to be tested as well as battery, battery can be ruined if you drain it too far, which you have

You will need to charge the battery back up, not just use jumper cables
And test if it can hold voltage at 12.3volts or higher

I would just replace alternator, but after charging up battery, hook it back up but DO NOT start engine

Alternator has 3 wires connected to it, you need to test them
Uses a Voltmeter and test voltage at the battery first, say it is 12.5volts

Key OFF, test alternator wires
Black/orange wire should have 12.5volts <<< battery voltage exactly
Yellow/white wire should have 12.5volts

If either doesn't have correct voltage then you have blown one or more fusible links, these will be near engine fuse box inside wiring harness

Test Light Green wire
Key OFF 0 volts
Key ON 12.5volts

If all wires test OK replace altenator
