Bought used engine; oh no

Well I bought a used engine online for my 1991 Ranger xlt 4x4 5 Speed 4.0l Vin X pulled the old one out early last summer and finally started putting it in yesterday and today we fired it up and she purrs like a kitten, I was so happy and thrilled…..THEN SAME AS THE OLDER OTHER ONE…WHITE SMOKE FILLS THE SHOP.

OH WELL, after all I went thru changing out engines I have plenty of courage now to go thru the steps for possible blown gasket etc.

How long did you let it run?

Any chance it's just moisture in the exhaust system from the previous engine ?

Filled the shop with white smoke. Idled it watching the dash temp gage, using temp lazer also on exhaust manifolds monitored it closely, let it reach normal temp, then shut it off, added coolant, repeated process until I realized the white smoke is continuing and white smoke not going away and I had to keep adding 1/2 qt coolant after each idle. Not as bad as the old engine but it seems the white smoke doesn’t go away and it keeps needing coolant.

Do you think I should be a little more patient and let it idle some more and possibly burn off some more possible condensation?

That’s what I’m thinking. I will pull the head check and everything as soon as this blizzard and cold spell passes. Its a nice looking engine on the outside, runs very smooth and doesn’t have oil and other fluid leaks everywhere so its worth diving into it.
