Bronco fuel tank swap into 98+ Ranger

I’ve been trying to figure out what fuel tank I’m able to use for my prerunner. I’m aware the 23 gallon tank is a direct swap into the older rangers. The full size broncos did come with a 33 gallon tank and I’d prefer to use that one if possible.

I’m having a hard time finding posts directly regarding the newer rangers. The only post I could find the person had to cut a hole in the tank to make it work.

My truck is a 1999 B4000 4.0 ohv 4x4 with the m50d-r1. Any pictures or information from anybody who has done it would be appreciated.

1983 thru 2011 Ranger frames have the same dimensions, so swaps into older Rangers will apply all the way up to 2011

There are a few swap articles on installing the B2 tanks in place of the spare tire on Rangers, but they hang down low, so you want/need a Body lift to get the bed up higher, but even then its still a bit low for off-road, and a FULL 23gal tank weighs 165lbs, and behind the rear axle
Front tank is 19gal so 135lbs, so kind of balances it out, but run the rear tank down first, or it may get a bit squirrely

No, a 33gal wouldn't fit between the frame rails
An in the bed tank would be best bet for more that 23gal

One thread here on the B2 tank swap: https://www.broncocorral.com/forums/...ranger.132155/

I don't recall ever seeing a larger tank swap

EDIT:
Just saw that you are in Calif............................
They can be pretty strict with emissions systems, gas tanks are required to have working EVAP systems, so I would check, or HIDE the filler, lol so they don't notice a 2nd gas tank

Ok good to know the 33 is too big. Thanks.

I had seen that thread on the bronco corral. I’m hoping somebody may have some input on a possible option to avoid cutting into the tank.

There’s more than enough details on mounting the BII tank so I don’t need more info on that. If there’s no way around choppin the tank up I think I have everything I need. I may post details on my install when the time comes so anybody searching for the same can use it as a reference.

I will be keeping EVAP. I work for a smog station and will be keeping the tank pretty concealed so it shouldn’t be an issue.

The OP in the above link used an older B2 gas tank, 1989-1990 B2 tank will come with correct sender for use in 1989 and up Rangers, AND the correct Pump, high pressure
In 1998 to 2000 Ranger's used an in tank FPR(fuel pressure regulator) and a single fuel line OUT to filter and engine
You can replace the B2 pump on its assembly with a 1998 pump/FPR
Or keep the 1989 pump and just add the FPR to the assembly

Picture here of 1998 fuel pump assembly: https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/497...af45776d9.jpeg
You see the pump at the bottom
And just above it is the FPR, the round thing, Ford just cut the original rubber connecting hose and inserted the FPR
This FPR is not usually sold separately but look around, its rated for 55-65psi, finding used on Rangers from 1998 thru 2011 is easy to come by at wrecking yards and fairly reliable used

You can use the Old Return line port as the EVAP hose connection, remove its internal hose to bottom of tank, of course

If you are going to use this as the only gas tank then you can install the EVAP pressure sensor in the Pump assemblies top plate, that's what Ford did in later years, just drill a hole in the plate
The 1998 computer can ONLY have 1 EVAP system so if you are keeping the front tank then no EVAP hook up is possible, plug the old return line port and no drilling is needed
