chrome tips, cut off or fix?

I have a dual exhaust on my truck and the tips have been smashed and rusting some?

Instead of fixing it i was thinking of cutting the tips off (18 inches) and leaving the the 2 pipes hidden further back or in other words 18 inches further back under the truck so they cannot be seen.

My main question is will it sound different...louder or quieter

and will this effect the performance of the truck....MPG Difference

thanks for the help

it might make it a little louder but maybe not... hmm.. probably wont hurt the mpg's any..

the way i see rangers is that they get ****ty gas mileage anyways so whatever you do to your truck it's not really going to make a big different.. haha.. i didnt buy my ranger for getting good mpg's..

ya i agree...im going from 2 1/4" exhaust pipe to 2.5" and i dont know how its gonna sound either... thats why i havent done it yet.. the pipe and muffer is laying under the truck right now just has to be put on.. mind you i dont have emissions checks and all that crap here either.. so i can run 2 feet of pipe through the hood if i wanted too and nobody would care.. plus a 2.5" chrome tip..

the tips i have on are 2.5 inch outlet 2.25 inlet, i don't know how much .25 could really matter or change the sound, i'm just being cheap and don't really want to put on chrome tips right before winter.

Cut them off and see....If you dont like it, get some new ones...If yours are very smashed, cutting off the flow will do more harm than cutting the tips off. I have my exhaust dumped behind the cab and it doesnt effect mpg's...If you have a back sliding window, you might smell exhaust in the cab with all windows open.

My S/O chrome tip was rusting out BAD and it looked like crap, so I cut it off just before the bend for the tip and put a regular exhaust pipe turn down 45deg tip. I then used high temp flat black paint on the turn down tip and pipe to the muffler. Now you don't really know it's there. It didn't make any changes to the MPG or noise, it's just a tip that was cut off. It looks much better then a rusty chrome tip though.
