I was looking at a listing on a 02 mustang gt. And under the hood it looks IDENTICAL to the grand marquis I used to have. I know they have the same engine but I was under the impression the mustang had 40 more hp. Anyone know what the difference between the 2 is? They are both 2 valve 4.6's. I'm not referring to the 3 valve that came out in '05

Ford Modular V8s, have a look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Modular_engine#4.6_L

By Year there were not many differences, I would image the Cams were different in Mustangs

yeah i saw that. it doesnt explain why. it has the mustang gt at 260hp and the grand marq at 220hp. 235hp is for the police interceptor, and that was due to dual exhaust.

There were a few piston differences as well, compression ratios from 9 to 11.5 or so
I think there were only 2 heads for the 2 Valve, W and R, but never researched it that much

on the topic of mustangs, do you guys think the old 5.0's are pretty robust? I've been trying to find an old 5.0 but they are so rare now its ridiculous

Yes, the small block Fords, 289s and 302s specifically were very robust engines, hard to come by because of that, people buy them up
Also loads of parts available for rebuilds or upgrades
