Drivetrain & engine help please

Hey guys, on the truck in my sig below I have a couple problems:

1. There is a clunk/thumping sound on the front right side when going over potholes, bumps, any tiny-large bump, but if I pres the brake any it won't do it, if I drive and lightly hold the brake while going over the same objects it doesn't do it, any suggestions as to what to check??


2. Tonight while driving around (maybe 4 miles) to try and resolve the question above my check engine light came on while doing roughly 40kph (20mph), so after I see this I go for home (about 3 blocks), on the way home the light goes out. After I turn into my driveway my truck studders at about 500RPM (normal idle is 600RPM), and after I pull into my garage and idle there for about 5 seconds the truck shudders at all RPM I tried (500-2200RPM).

!!After I turn my truck off and try to start it again I notice the fuel pump make a higher-pitch whine than usual, my truck is really low on gas, could this affect it to the point it makes the fuel pump sound different, truck shudder and check engine light come on? !!

could you possibly be sucking up some of the ****ty stuff in your gas tank that normally floats on top but is now getting sucked in casue your tanks almost empty???......i know my moms vehicle used to act up when the gas got low...i assumed it was becasue of this....but im no expert....it was just a thought

heh, aperently you need a fuel called "gasoline" to make these automobiles run . . . I however did not have any lol

I still have the suspension noise to diagnose so all comments/suggests more than welcome, thanks guys.

hey no need to be cocky about it.....im just tellin ya ive had vehicles act the same way due to the fact that when the gas is low it sucks up alot of the imperfections in the gas like rust and stuff that it otherwise diddnt

From what I read he was not being cocky about it, he was actually out of fuel.

i apologize if he wasnt being that way...just came off like that to me....regardless...im simply disgusted with my ranger...bought it from a dealer about a month ago...2004 with 40k miles...numerous problems...first the rear e brake locked and ruined everything inside the drum...i have an extremely bad noise coming from the engine or somewhere up there when im hard on the gas....alignment is not even close to on....the truck is dogtracking....box isnt aligned right...makes me believe the whole trucks been in an accident with a bent frame even though it comes off clean on carfax......completely disgusts me....prolly will be selling it

I would take the wheels off and check the brakes. Sounds like something is lose on the brake calipers or the pads. That is a good starting pt.

I will today, the only thing is the clunk doesn't sound like something that small, sounds AND FEELS like something alot larger/heavier. It also does it when I turn sometimes I may add, thanks guys!

Check the bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the spindle not just the ones that hold the caliper to the bracket. I had one of the bolts come out of the bracket and it destroyed the wheel. Yours could just be loose. Also check to make sure that your spindle nut (the one in the middle of the hub) is torqued properly.

On my truck (94' 2WD) they have the "compression clips", no bolts, you slide compressable pins through slots that match up on the bracket and caliper, I replaced all 4 of these and both front calipers this summer and the noise has continued. We found out the "washer" on my front right cab bodymount was broken so we fixed that and it hasn't inproved. Thanks for the help again guys!
