Never heard of oil pump problems with that engine, 2.3l Duratec(Mazda L) engine
It is a double overhead cam(DOHC) engine and use friction locked timing chain gears so they can slip
I would test compression, it runs 9.7:1 compression ratio so expected is 170psi +
Once that is done and compression is HIGH you can move on to spark or fuel issues, but ALWAYS start with compression since its a black or white issue, and if compression is low you will waste alot of time and maybe money on non-fixes
