I just got new tires for my truck now that it seems to be running good. BFG AT's KO 31X10.5X15 for $115.00 each installed. Not a bad price at all, my local tire guy had them on sale.

I got looking and noticed the spare is a Goodyear Wrangler P235/75R/15, which is kinda small when placed beside a 31. I intended to put on one of my used BFG 31's as a spare but it looks like it wont fit in the stock location. How lame is that? I guess I could keep it in the bed?

On the slime chance I will need my spare (I drove 5K last year) should I even give a hoot? From what I have heard, it is not good for a limited slip to run with miss matched tire sizes. Has anyone else thought of this? I mean, you guys with 33', do you run/keep a 33" tire for a spare or do you go without?

keep two good matched tires on the rear
stay out of 4WD if you have it
get correct sized tire repaired or purchase another
31 will not easily fit under the bed
maybe a very worn one and no receiver hitch
dual exhaust also does not like a 31 inch spare
and why say L2 on a 2002 - what you have is no slacker - why pose up for the masses?

 

It could break your torsen and might burn out you t-lock after a while ; I don't know how far. I assume the thickness of the tire would be the spare carrier problem. How about a tall skinny tire on a 16 inch rim. I carry a 12v air compressor and a plug kit and look at my tires daily. Haven't had a blowout or a piece of rebar driven through my tires . I guess a 4x4 probably should have a spare the same the same height , even if not the same width as the rest.

 

Put it on the front, duh! Match the size on the rear, don't lock the front with the spare.

 

spare tires aren't meant to be replacement tires, just a crutch to get you to a tire shop or be able to be towed.

they are also not supossed to go over 50mph even if they are considered a "fullsize" spare.

it shouldn't hurt your LS if you keep the use restricted to what they were meant for.

 

I disagree. It might not, but it certianly has the potential...

The front is a rotating assemble, freely, when not engaged in 4x4. Use the oddbal up front and drive with the steering wheel turned a little, big deal. At least you aren't binding gears in the rear.

 

yea deffinatly use the spare up front...

personaly i dont see a point to having a 31" spare stock, i think all rangers have the 235/75/15 or 225/70/15 because its the closest to stock tire sizes///

 

To me, having a spare the same size as your other tires is just how it should be. Besides, the few times I had to get my spare out from under the truck was just plain fun. Plan on getting very dirty with road goo. Yeah....I have no interest in hurting my LS axle, I am on axle #2 already. I know a spare is for "temporary use only" and you should drive slow to the nearest tire shop.

I measured and there is no way a 31 will fit under the truck. Shes going to live in the bed now.

It won't fit in mine! Not unless I cut off my exhaust and got rid of my hitch. It might fit then. My tire is a 235-70r16 and it is literally touching the trailer hitch and my exhaust is so close I have it heat wrapped in order to not burn up the tire. It was the only way my exhaust guy would do it as he would be liable if I burned up the spare!

Has anyone tried the 15" steel spare wheel up front on an 03+ 4X4? I was just curious as to the fit of it on the larger rotors. I know that most aftermarket 15's are good, but the Edge plus 15's are a no go with the bigger rotors. Luckily I have not had to try it yet, but would hate to tear up a caliper because Ford didn't think ahead.

 

I agree, i have one under there but it's worn down a to less than half original tread.

 

mine is worn down also, but i wouldn't think twice about puttin a 32" down there. i also have a hidden hitch buy the way.

this discussion has come up many times before and the way i see it is there has to be some slight diffrence to some of our rangers. some like me have no problems and others can't do it at all. i don't know why though

 

A 31" tire fits in the spare tire space of my Ranger. It is a tight fit and I had to adjust my tail pipe to get clearance but it does fit. A 32" tire with no tread might fit but that would not be very practical.

 

thats weird, my spare is a 245/75-16 (almost a 31)

 

Some hitches aren't made to allow use of the stock carrier.
