Icon2 Ford F-150 to Fill Ranger’s Shoes, But New Global Ranger Still Possible

Production of the Ranger pickup truck will end next year, with Ford hoping buyers will move up to the F-150. If demand is sufficient, however, Ford might also look to introduce its upcoming global midsize truck platform (the new Ranger) to the U.S.

In an interview with PickupTrucks.com, Ford product boss Derrick Kuzak confirmed the Ranger was to be eliminated after an incredibly long production run, which has stretched over a decade. With most owners using their Rangers for commuter duty, Ford thinks the move to an F-150 won’t be difficult. After all, the current 2.3-liter 4-cylinder Ranger gets 19/24 mpg, which is likely worse than what an F-150 equipped with Ford’s new 3.7-liter V6 would get. While the use of the 3.7 in the F-150 is still unconfirmed, in the Mustang it gets an impressive 30 mpg.

According to Kuzak, the biggest issue with bringing over the new Ranger to the U.S. is how it would fit into the North American marketplace. “It’s no secret we have a new Ranger coming globally. We’re working on one for all the other markets in the world,” said Kuzak to PickupTrucks.com. “The difference is that all o those other markets only have a Ranger. They don’t have an F-150 above it.”

In other words, Ford would not want to cannibalize sales of the top-selling F-150.

The Ford Ranger continues to be the second best selling compact pickup in the U.S., with 55,600 units moved last year. The Ranger is, however, a distant second to the Toyota Tacoma at 111,824 units.

Derrick kuzak said ford ranger had an "just over a decade long" production run?? Try 29 years!
(the 1983 models came out starting in August of 1982 and production ends 2011)
thats nearly 3 decades! Derrick Kuzak is an idiot.

I know they had a diesel back in the day. There is member here with one. I'm talking to all the people that want a diesel Ranger that would never be able to afford them because of the price jump.

i think they need a ranger that is just like the tacoma same type of options and ****, but they do have a v8 4 door called the sport trac. but it doesnt sell worth ****. i think if they would of promoted the sport trac more toward the off road and people that use it. instead of a street car. they are so damn low to the ground. it would of sold better.

I think Del Taco has taco Tuesday. I like them better than Taco Bell. So I should roll up in my Taco and ask for tacos.

They where going to drop the ranger this year and make a F-100 but because ranger sales took off they want to keep building the ranger and not build the f-100 . That is comeing from people i now that work in the glass house in Dearborn Mi. it might change next year if ranger sales go down.

I'm done caring, The news around Minnesota a few years back when it was supposed to shut down in 08 was that a developer had a deal to level the plant and build river side condos. This was written in stone according to the papers, three model years later they are still building there and our governor is pushing Ford to bring their “green” cars here to be built in the plant. I don’t even think ford knows what it wants anymore.

Taco Del Mar beats the pants off of Del Taco, Chipotle, etc. FYI. lol

The reason Ford made the Sport Trac here instead of the 4-door Ranger is because they can demand a higher price with the Explorer name plate. The sport trac was a 4 door ranger, but with a higher profit margin I think. Now the Sport Trac is based on the new Explorer platform with IRS, and although it is a nice rig it is much less of a "truck".
Ranger sales have dropped a lot because nothing has changed on them, while other companies are making upgrades to mid sized trucks. A mid sized Ranger would likely cut into F150 sales so I can't say I blame them for not wanting to sell them here, although I hope they do.
It would be nice to have a more reasonably priced mid-sized truck with new engine choices and better suspension. They would sell if they were priced right, but Ford would profit more by pushing people into the F150.
