Good donor vehicle for a 5.0 V8 or similar to swap into my 2000

For those in the dark, I'm facing a cracked head problem, possible bent valves (lots of clanging and banging), and maybe a cracked block. I recently replaced all of my gaskets in hopes of fixing this problem with minimal expense. I've realized now that this is impossible, and a significant expense will be required to keep my Ranger moving forward. (significant to me: $200 or more)

Does anyone have a recommendation for the BEST donor vehicle/specification for a 5 Liter V8? I've gotten the "go ahead" from my wife to partition my income tax return to swapping out my 4 little squirrels for 8 of it's bigger brothers.

I figured after having the head machined, the possible bent valve(s) replaced, and possibly replacing the head if it's cracked, I'd end up spending near the amount it would cost to swap a V8. (well, not quite NEAR, but still not enough to invest into a 7 year old 4-banger)

I'm tired of being the little dog around town anyway....it's time for some real power!

I know there is a kit of motor mounts designed to create a direct bolt-in for Ranger's and 5.0 V8s. It's been a while since I've researched this info, though. I know there are two manufacturers in particular who make parts specifically for Ranger's and Pinto's, but I can't recall names. Anyone? Racer-Walsh is on my other tab right now, so I will be browsing their site for info/parts.

Please share any resources, or EXPERIENCED knowledge you may have!

Here is the basic run-down of info I would like to get before making a final decision.
  • Average (reasonable) cost of donor motor in fair/good condition.
  • Cost of accessory parts to make it compatible with my engine compartment (mounts, brackets, etc.).
  • Pictures, pictures pictures, preferably of a Generation 4 with this swap.
  • List of parts that will need to be replaced to accommodate a V8 (i.e. fuel pump/filter/lines, etc.)

I know this is taking on a huge job, but I have the tools and time to do it....so why not!?

If anyone can think of any legitimate reasons why I shouldn't take my pristine body-condition Ranger to the next level with a motor swap, please share! I'd hate to have to trade or sell my favorite truck just because of motor problems!

Everything you need to know is in this thread:

Lots of pictures of a 99:

The engine bolts in with stock mounts to a 98+ 4x4 Ranger. BrianB31 makes adapter mounts for 4x2 XL/XLT like yours.

My question, out of pure curiosity, is how you grenaded the 4 banger like you say? Is there a thread elsewhere explaining this?

Edit found the thread, but I see no where in there where you found the exact cause of your problems?

The JD stuff and most other "swap kit" parts will work for 97-back Rangers but most of it does not apply to 98+.

I have no frickin clue. The only assumption I can make is either I blew a head gasket or my head cracked (why? I dunno.) However, during replacement of my gaskets, I failed to get the head machined. It is probably warped now, (or cracked) which is causing a continuing problem of coolant leaking into the oil. (see previous thread)

As you know, coolant serves no lubricity, and wears out the valves super fast. I now have a bent valve or something knocking in the valve train.

One question....does your wife have a sister?

Sorry, good luck with the swap. Keep us posted
